Joycelyn, The Cancer Warrior

I've always looked at my mother as more than human. She is the person who tells me when I'm right and when I'm wrong. There's no sugar coating things, she tells it like it is even when you don't ask. I call her for every little thing, even when i know she doesn't know the answer if she made it up, I'd believe her! She is the type of woman my friends always love to be around, a positive spirit and a nurturing heart...she can fix anything! So, the day she called me in her disguised "nothing is wrong, i'm going to be ok" voice I knew we weren't ok. For the first time my Superwoman was having a human moment. As I stood in my kitchen glancing over at my husband who I could tell already knew what my phone call was my heart sank, my knees buckled and I could feel the "kryptonite" penetrating through my phone. She said, "I am going to be fine, but I found a lump and it's cancerous, well actually God led me to the lump!" Tears uncontrollably streamed down my face. All I can think is my Superhero is sick. The one person who fixes everything now needs to be fixed. My heart is broken! But in real Joycelyn fashion she says to me, "It is ok to be upset i know this is shocking, but I am The Cancer Warrior!" Incredible...a brand new cancer diagnosis and this woman is already celebrating her victory over this disease that takes too many of our mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers and children. In her head she has already beat it! And at that moment I knew she would too. But this journey has not been as easy as she thought. The chemotherapy that she is on has caused extreme pain among other issues causing her to miss work, which she never does. I am telling my mothers story not because she is any different than any other person fighting and beating cancer, but because my Superhero deserves for her fight to be heard.
