Josefina, World Renowned Mexican Artist, Continues To Need Our Help
For more than four years, with the generous support from many of you, we've been supplying drugs to help Josefina Aguilar fight diabetes. I was told by Linda Hanna who works directly with Josefina in Oaxaca, that without our support Josefina would not be alive today.
Some of you may be new, or do not remember our fund raising campaign to help Josefina, so allow me to take a step back. Josefina Aguilar, the famous Mexican Folk Artist from Oaxaca, lost her sight to diabetes and was struggling to pay her medical expenses. We raised enough money to provide Josefina with life-saving medicine which has allowed her to continue to work. She can shape objects which her daughter paints, but her production has fallen sharply. Our funds will run out soon, and our goal is to raise $10,000 which will pay for Josefina's medicines for the next six years.
Josefina began learning her craft from her grandmother and mother when she was six years old. On a trip to Oaxaca in 1960 Nelson Rockefeller recognized her work and bought many of her pieces for his collection. She has had a profound influence on the creative lives of the younger generation in her large family and is an inspiration to aspiring artists in her village and beyond.
When I asked Josefina how she can continue to work when she can no longer, see she replied, "It's not the eyes, but the brain and the hands." To that I would add that it also takes a strong will and determination which Josefina has in abundance. Josefina is now 74, and a smile has returned to her face, something we hadn't seen in a long time. We want to keep that smile on Josefina's face by allowing her to continue working which is the best medicine in the world, and letting her know that people all over the world treasure her remarkable work.
Our funds are running out. It's time for us to renew our pledge to help Josefina continue her fight against diabetes, a disease which can be controlled with our help. Will you please consider a donation of any size and ask your friends and colleagues to join you. The more people we can reach, the more successful our appeal will be. Our continuing help will assure that this amazing artist, who has given so much joy to so many, will continue to receive the medical treatment and care that she needs and deserves,and that enables her to continue her art..
