Save Black and Brown Mothers' Lives on Long Island

Tax deductible

In Long Island and the surrounding areas, a heartbreaking crisis is unfolding, disproportionately impacting Black and Brown mothers. The numbers are staggering, and the need for immediate action is undeniable:

Horrifying Maternal Health Disparities:
  • On Long Island, the infant mortality rate for white babies is about 2 deaths per 1,000 live births. However, for Black babies, the rate is much higher, at about 8 to 9 deaths per 1,000 live births.
  • Black and Brown mothers are 3 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications compared to their white counterparts.
  • In the United States, about 700 Black and Brown mothers die each year due to preventable causes.
  • Over the past two decades, the higher mortality rate among Black Americans resulted in 1.6 million excess deaths compared to white Americans.
  • The maternal mortality rate for Black women is more than double that of white women, exposing a severe healthcare disparity.
  • Alarmingly, 80% of these deaths are preventable, highlighting systemic failures in our healthcare system.

We can fix this problem together by supporting One Love Birthing House:
Your contribution will help open the doors of One Love Birthing House, where Black and Brown mothers will find:

  • Private Birthing Suites: Safe, serene spaces where mothers can bring their new life into the world surrounded by love and tranquility.
  • Fresh Food Prepared from the Garden: Nourishing organic food, directly from our garden, providing vital sustenance during the birthing journey.
  • Knowledge about Proper Postpartum Care: Essential education and resources to empower mothers with the information they need to navigate post-partum life.
  • Lactation Instruction: Support and guidance for new mothers, ensuring that breastfeeding is a comfortable and healthy experience.
  • Mental and Wellness Check-Ins: Ongoing care to address mental health and overall well-being, a critical component of maternal care.
