Local Veteran in Need

We are starting a gofundme page for John Horton. John is a veteran who is still very active in his community. He went through Basic Training at Ft. Lewis right here in Washington state. Then, went on to Ft. Knox Kentucky for his AIT training. At the end of his enlistment he recieved and honorable discharge.

On Wednesday December 6th, John was shot in the abdomen. It’s truly a remarkable story. The bullet entered the side of his abdomen, ricocheted off his rib, hit is liver, then nicked his kidney and spine. Finally coming to rest in the muscle near his spine. The doctors and nurses were amazed that he was up and moving around. However, because of the trauma already endured by his body and the internal bleeding risk, they do not want to go in to retrieve the bullet. So, not only will he have a physical and emotional scar from the bullet wound he now will live with the bullet inside him for the rest of his life.

The police, and John, believe that he was hit by a stray bullet and is being classified as a hunting accident. The bullet entered his house through the window in John’s dining room and struck him as he was sitting at his table working on an upcoming community event on December 16th.

This, on one hand, is a travesty. On the other, nothing short of a miracle. John is giving all the thanks to the Lord for saving him. As well as the first responders, helicopter pilot and crew, as well as the nurses and doctors who took such good care of him during his 3 day stay in the hospital.

John is the Commander of the Colville American Legion Post 47. As well as a very active member of the American Legion Riders group.

I’m sure most people have either met John, or know of the many community outreach and fundraising activities John has organized and/or participated in. Including but not limited to: Food Drives, Warming Centers, free dinners to the community, and gift giving during the holidays. He is also the man who keeps his riders safe by being the road boss on long rides to honor veterans on the annual 9/11 Memorial Ride. In addition to escorting veteran’s fallen remains to their final resting place. There is not enough room here to list all the ways that John reaches out to help veterans, their families, and the community around him.

Please take time to help us raise money to help cover medical bills associated with the medical transportation and services that John needed to save his life.

He has given selflessly to his country and his community for years. Now it is time for us, as his community, to dig deep and help this more than worthy man.
