YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO PAY TRIBUTE TO A GREAT AUSTRALIAN
A highlight of the 50th Tamworth Country Music Festival in January 2022 will be the unveiling of a life size bronze statue of John Williamson AM.
Initiated by a citizens group, and supported by Tamworth Regional Council, the statue will be sculpted by renowned artist Tanya Bartlett and installed in Tamworth’s central business district, near statues of Smoky Dawson, Slim Dusty and Joy McKean.
We invite you to contribute to this permanent monument to a giant of Australian Country Music and an outstanding Australian.
As a singer and songwriter he has shown a unique ability to reach out and touch Australians from all walks of life.
Over the last 50 years, John has created an image of our country that has resonated throughout our nation.
His first release in 1970, Old Man Emu, with its humour and authentic Australian character, guarantee it a place in our nation’s musical history.
It introduced us to a new talent who was driven and shaped by his passionate love, experience and dedication to this land and its people.
JW won his first of almost 30 Golden Guitars in 1985 following with several classic albums, including Mallee Boy, Boomerang Café and Warragul.
By the late 1980s, a string of superb ballads, like Cootamundra Wattle, Raining On The Rock, Papa Whisky November, were attracting a younger more contemporary audience to Australian country music.
In 1987, John’s classic True Blue was adopted by the Australian Cricket Team as their theme song and also used by the national Australia Made Campaign.
An emotional, but deliberately low key, hymn to what being Australian is all about, True Blue has became one of our nation’s most recognised and celebrated songs.
Embedded in our lives, it is played constantly on media and performed with respect and affection at countless public and private events throughout the nation.
John has contributed to the country music industry, serving as the inaugural Vice Chair and later as President of the Country Music Association of Australia and helping guarantee the future of the Golden Guitar Awards.
An early star on the Roll of Renown (1988), he has won countless awards and trophies and is recognised universally as an inspired country music performer and songwriter.
Patron of the JW Statue Appeal is Joy McKean OAM.
Chair of the fundraising committee is Col Murray with committee members Max Ellis, Barry Harley, Bill Warburton, Rebecca Gracie, Cheryl Brown, Lorraine Pfitzner, Bridget Guthrie, Bob Kirchner and Kate Nugent.
This appeal is being conducted under the auspices of the Australian Country Music Foundation Inc.
