My 3-year-old nephew, Joey MacInnis, is the sweetest little boy. He loves to race toy cars around the room and to flex his muscles like the Incredible Hulk. If he punches a little too hard, he always apologizes. Joey’s superhero strength is about to help him through a difficult time.
At the end of 2017, Joey was diagnosed with a rare disease called aplastic anemia. This means that Joey’s bone marrow is failing to produce the cells that run the immune system. It can be nearly impossible to pinpoint the cause.
The outstanding doctors at Dana-Farber’s Jimmy Fund Clinic in Boston have recommended a bone marrow transplant for Joey. Fortunately, his brother Jake is a perfect match, and a sibling transplant is Joey’s best chance at a full cure. Joey is strong and swears that he is not sick, but the transplant means that he has to become much sicker before he can get better.
Joey’s recovery may take as long as a year, during which he must spend his first six to nine months indoors with visitors limited to his immediate family and medical staff.
