Joel Tiegreen is a missionary sent out by Covenant Church in Siloam Springs, AR. He and his wife, Emily, have been ministering oversees for the past five years. They have been blessed with five children. Owen, their first born is 9. Emma, the only girl is 8. Judson just had his fifth birthday. Abraham, also known as Ibo, is 3. James, who was born only two weeks before Joel found out he had cancer, is now 5 months. These children are such gifts!
RECENT UPDATE FROM JOEL & EMILY TIEGREEN
The past few months have thrown our family into a new chapter, one of pain and suffering. Yet through even this, we place ourselves under the care of a good and merciful God.
In January a tumor was discovered in Joel's arm and we and the doctors thought it was benign. After removing the tumor it was discovered that it was a high-grade soft tissue sarcoma and we quickly returned to the U.S. for treatment. At the time cancer was not detected anywhere else in his body, and Joel quickly began medical treatment on his arm.
Following 7 weeks of radiation, Joel's most recent PET scan showed that the cancer had spread aggressively to his lungs, with many tumors present. Currently he was told the diagnosis is terminal, but Joel is seeking further treatment to extend his life and time with his family. If the cancer responds well to treatment his life could be much longer. The treatment plans are costly and must begin quickly to prevent further spread of the cancer.
Time is precious to us all, but oh how much more precious it is to our family right now. Every day we get to spend with one another is a gift from the Lord. We know that God has already numbered our days. In His wisdom He doesn’t tell us when our last day on earth is. It has taken much courage to try some of these treatments and we don’t want to give ourselves or the kids false hope in them. Recently we asked Owen and Emma what they thought about what some of these treatments meant for our family. Immediately Owen said, “If it means we have one more day with you, I want to try!” Emma interjected, “If it means one more hour!” Hearing that from your kids will give anyone a special kind of courage. We are explaining it to them as - we have today, tomorrow is priceless but not promised, and eternity with Christ is our deepest hope. Our hope rests in Christ alone, and we pray all things would be done for his glory. We fully trust the Lord and know his will will be done. We think it’s wise to do as much medically as we can. Thank you for loving us well.
