SUNSHINE BERNIE'S MEDICAL FUND

At 5:00am Monday December 29th, 2014 Sunshine Bernie, our thoroughbred racehorse was running back towards our driveway on rt 102 after getting out of his paddock during early morning hours. He was hit by a truck going between 40 and 50 mph.
His face struck the windshield and was shredded at the orbital area on left side and muzzle/mouth area. A front tendon on his right leg was completely severed and he suffered deep scraping on other front leg, on of his back legs and chest.
A caring animal control officer held onto him for 2 hours after the accident, waiting in front of the fire station for a vet she called, not knowing who Bernie belonged to.
When I woke up and he wasnt there, devastation barely describes how I felt. I followed my instinct and it immediately led me through the woods to the church where I then spotted Bernie covered in blankets, with gauze all over his head.
His injuries were terrifying.
We took the best course of action and brought Sunshine Bernie to Tufts Large Animal Hospital in MA. They did a great job stabilizing him, and making us feel confident that he would pull through. This confidence however did not come without a price tag. 3 overnights, sutures, an eye removal, setting of fractured bones, bandages, and meds has already put us close to $4,000, with at least another $1500 in supplies and after care work.
The good news is that he is now home. He is eating well, has some spunk back , and is adjusting to life after a tragedy like this. He will require lots of full time TLC for a while and we are ready to give it, in fact we have been staying in the barn 24 / 7 just to keep an eye on him and to keep him company. This will continue in this manner for the next two weeks and my wife has had to take unpaid time off of work just to be there for him. We will then have an evaluation done to see where we stand.
We have set up this account to help cover some of the costs we have incured. Being that this happened right after the holidays, and that it was not something we had expected, the costs involved have drained our accounts, making everything a bit tougher. Any donation is appreciated, a few dollars may be gauze or wrap, a more substantial amount may be pain meds or antibiotics. He is a strong horse, full of spirit and we will make it through this. Your contribution will help ease the stress involved with the monetary end of things. The love and attention required is the easy part.
