Cindy Alexander has been diagnosed with a rare, rapidly progressing neurodegenerative disease, similar to Parkinson’s Disease, which has drastically affected her mobility and her ability to care for herself. Along with the high expense of living with a chronic illness, serious and costl y renovations must be made to the Alexander home in order for Cindy to remain there. That’s where you come in.
Cindy has been an active and integral part of Duluth and the surrounding communities for decades. She founded the Hermantown Star in 1977, and remained owner, editor, photographer, and writer until 1998. She was a professional English tutor at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College for 10 years, where she helped countless students find their voices. She has been a visible and tireless member of First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in Duluth, lending her talents to everything from publications to Sunday school to the world-renowned handbell program. But to those of us fortunate enough to call her family, her most impactful roles have been as wife, mother, daughter, sister, mother-in-law, and now grandmother.
To be available to help Cindy in her everyday needs, her husband Bill will be leaving his job as band director at the Marshall School in Duluth. While this will be enormously helpful in terms of Cindy's care, it does mean leaving behind his chief source of income. Cindy's daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren will also be heading back to Minnesota to lend a hand-- and to provide much needed immersion grandchild therapy. It is our hope that we can remain together in the home that Cindy and Bill built to provide the love, assistance and support that Cindy needs.
