He has pancreatitis. On Friday, March 9, Jesus felt a lot of pain in his stomach and drove himself to the ER in Reedsburg, WI, at about 2pm in the evening. That night, he was transferred by ambulance from Reedsburg Hospital to the UW-Madison hospital at about 10pm. He eventually was moved to the TLC, the Trauma and Life Recovery Center, what we know most commonly as the ICU, or Intensive Care Unit.   March 15, 2018, at 2:30pm: We had a meeting with Jesus's medical team. The following are notes I  took during the meeting:  The pressure in Jesus's abdomen because of the pancreatitis hurt the kidneys, which is why they are doing continuous dialysis.  Surgeons operated on Monday, March 12, made an incision, and placed a sort of vacuum in his stomach to withdraw liquid from his body. The idea is that will alleviate the pressure and swelling of the pancreas. The surgeons went today (3/15)  to look around and clean up some stuff, and they saw the pancreas was significantly damaged; he may not ever recover the function of his pancreas. It is quite inflamed and it’s almost a "dead pancreas." The doctors hope that once the inflammation goes down, we’ll have more idea of how his pancreas is doing. The surgeons also discovered Jesus had bleeding from the pancreas, which is a step back. We’ll get more of an idea of how much function is left of the pancreas with time, but from what the surgeon said right now is that a lot of it is damaged and may not come back. Part of what the pancreas does is that it gives us protein to help us digest and helps control insulin, so fortunately right now his blood sugars are not uncontrollable, so there is some function there — but to understand the full amount of damage is still hard to tell. People can live without a pancreas, but his life will change drastically. Because of the pancreatitis, Jesus had injury to his lungs, kidneys, and his heart, making his blood pressure (BP) really low. However, he is off blood pressure medication now, which means his heart is working OK! We have also seen drastic improvement in his lungs, and in his blood pressure, and a little bit in his kidneys.  However, Jesús is still on life support — the doctors told us that we'll see progress forward and back, forward and back. For example, the little bit of blood in the pancreas today was a little bit of a setback, but they're hopeful he’ll continue to make improvement. As people are in the TLC, more complications happen. It just means how sick people are here. Things go back and forth.  Overall, the doctors see him going through a long recovery — if he has no setbacks and he continues to improve, this will be a long-term recovery. It won’t happen very quickly, especially with his abdomen. What is long? Probably going to be in the TLC for at least another week. We will know he is improving when the swelling goes down and when the pressure in the abdomen goes down. After all of this, he’ll be weak physically, and he’ll need physical therapy. Long term, they expect a recovery time of weeks —> months.  He’s at a higher risk of all of these complications as long as he goes on the breathing tube, etc. If his breathing tube can’t be removed for another week, he’ll need a trach.  The major issues for him: pancreas, kidney, lungs; for now, his heart is doing ok, but could also change. The silver lining in all of this is that he is young. He might still not make it. But that he’s young is beneficial. We’ll keep our fingers crossed and keep giving him all the support that we can and hopefully things continue to move forward.  ---

La idea es aliviar la presión y lo hinchado del páncreas. Los cirujanos fueron hoy (3/15) para mirar alrededor y limpiar algunas cosas, y vieron que el páncreas estaba significativamente dañado; es posible que nunca recupere la función de su páncreas. Está bastante inflamado y es casi un "páncreas muerto". Los doctores esperan que una vez que la inflamación baje, tengamos más idea de cómo esté su páncreas. Los cirujanos también descubrieron que Jesús tenía sangrado del páncreas, que es un paso atrás. Obtendremos más idea de la función que queda del páncreas con el tiempo, por lo que el cirujano dijo que en este momento puede que no regrese la función del páncreas. Parte de lo que hace el páncreas es que nos proporciona proteínas para ayudarnos a digerir y ayuda a controlar la insulina, así que afortunadamente ahora sus niveles de azúcar en la sangre no son incontrolables, por lo que hay algunas funciones allí, pero comprender la cantidad total de daños sigue siendo difícil decir. La gente puede vivir sin páncreas, pero su vida cambiará drásticamente. Debido a la pancreatitis, Jesús tuvo una lesión en los pulmones, los riñones y el corazón, lo que hizo que su presión arterial (PA) fuera realmente baja. Sin embargo, ya no toma medicamentos para la presión arterial, lo que significa que su corazón está funcionando bien. También hemos visto mejorías drásticas en sus pulmones, y en su presión arterial, y un poco en sus riñones. Sin embargo, Jesús todavía está en soporte vital: los médicos nos dijeron que veremos progresos hacia adelante y hacia atrás, adelante y atrás. Por ejemplo, la pequeña cantidad de sangre en el páncreas hoy fue un pequeño retraso, pero tienen la esperanza de que continúe mejorando. Como las personas están en TLC, ocurren más complicaciones. En general, los médicos lo ven pasar por una larga recuperación; si no tiene ningún contratiempo y continúa mejorando, esta será una recuperación a largo plazo. No sucederá muy rápido, especialmente con su abdomen. ¿Qué es largo? Probablemente estará en el TLC por lo menos otra semana más. Sabremos que está mejorando cuando la hinchazón disminuye y cuando la presión en el abdomen disminuye. Después de todo esto, estará débil físicamente y necesitará terapia física. A largo plazo, esperan un tiempo de recuperación de semanas -> meses. Está en mayor riesgo de todas estas complicaciones siempre y cuando se mantenga el tubo de respiración. Si su tubo de respiración no se puede extraer por otra semana, necesitará una traqueotomía. Los principales problemas para él: páncreas, riñón, pulmones; por ahora, su corazón está bien, pero también podría cambiar. El lado positivo en todo esto es que él es joven. Puede que todavía no lo haga. Pero que él es joven es beneficioso. Mantendremos la fe en Dios, los dedos cruzados, y sigamos dándole todo el apoyo que podamos y con suerte las cosas sigan avanzando.
