Hi everyone! My name is Jessa Angel, I’m a 26-year-old Latina trans woman who has been living in New York City for nine years now. I’ve worked in nightlife as well as being a SWer. During this global pandemic my financial situation has been increasingly dire with my sources of income being scarce or completely unavailable. The financial stress our current situation has put me in has only added anxiety to my life which has worsened my gender dysphoria. Unfortunately there is no way to survive with basic needs as well as save for needed surgeries at the moment. I have been traveling for my income as a SWer and it is compromising to my health (during covid).
I started my journey transitioning three years ago with HRT and I’m ready, and need, to take the next steps for transition with FFS and top surgery. I’m lucky to have medical insurance coverage but unfortunately, as is the case for most insurance companies, trans-related health needs are not covered. I do not have family that I can depend on for finances and my financial independence has been taken away during the pandemic. I have been fully independent since the age of seventeen with no family support or presence.
I’m still figuring out basic costs and setting up consultations (which are booked out for months in advance and prolonged by the pandemic) but am estimating that I’ll need to raise around $50,000. This includes estimated costs of surgeries and living expenses during recovery. Within the next two years I would like to be fully transitioned to my own personal goals. I know many people are in difficult financial situations during this time but if you’re able to give any amount, I’d greatly appreciate it. I wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t necessary for my mental and physical health and well-being, and I’m grateful for any support I receive.
