Jeremy King's Leukemia Journey

Donation protected
As some of you know, Jeremy was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) on January 26, 2016.

Here is what you may not know:

Jeremy lost a portion of his left leg while trying to save a group of friends on March 23, 1996.  As a result of the pre-existing conditions, no health insurance company has offered a reasonable rate that Jeremy could afford; therefore, when he received this CML diagnosis, he had no health insurance to cover any medical costs.

His original oncologist, Dr. D’Cunha, started a treatment plan in February 2016 with a targeted drug, Gleevac, which uses Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor (TKI).  TKI identifies and attacks specific types of cancer cells while causing less damage to normal cells. TKI will help keep Jeremy’s Leukemia controlled, but NOT CURED.  There is currently no cure for this type of Leukemia.

Jeremy was having to see Dr. D’Cunha twice a month, have labs drawn once a month and take 400mg of Gleevac a day.  $500 for a doctor’s visit, $350 for labs and $7,200 for medicine.

Thanks to a fundraiser put on by his friends in his hometown of Post, TX, Jeremy was able to continue his medical care through April 2017, but could not afford the cost of care after that.

Since April 2017, Jeremy has been living with CML without any medical intervention; however, two weeks ago on Sunday, February 25, 2018, CML caught up with him and he was hospitalized. His white blood cell count was 378,000 (normal should be no more than 10,000), his spleen was swollen five times more than normal and he had lost 20% of his spleen's function (which acts as a filter for blood and helps fight bacteria that cause pneumonia & meningitis).

His new oncologist, Dr. Yalamanchili, has prescribed 100mg Sprycel and 300mg Allopurinol. (Google if curious)

Jeremy has come to grips that he cannot continue to try and fight CML on his own…without the medicine, his life expectancy is 3-7 years.

Right now, he is in the chronic phase, which responds well to treatment; however, eventually the medicine will quit working and Jeremy will move into the Accelerated Phase and eventually end up in the Acute Phase which will ultimately take his life.

He has applied for Financial Aid through the Joe Arrington Cancer Research and Treatment Center (JACC) and has also applied for disability; however, until he is approved (God willing), he will need help covering his medical expenses.

OUR GOAL IS TO RAISE $16,159.42 BY APRIL 30, 2018.

Jeremy, Dakota, Dylan & Brazos want to thank each and every one of you for your support throughout this process. While this path has been short in time it is just the beginning of a much longer road for Jeremy.

Knowing that each of you will be there to offer support and assistance to him makes this road he must travel much easier. Thank you.
