My friend Jennifer (Jen) is a single mom of Jack (13 months old) and is expecting a baby girl in September. Her fiance has abandoned them and she was recently evicted from her apartment. On August 12, 2014, Jen and Jack moved into a shelter in San Francisco.
I have created this fundraising page to provide financial support for this family in crisis. Money raised will go towards Jen's immediate needs and long term objectives. We have set a goal of $25,000.00 (which can cover approximately nine months of living expenses, including private housing).
Jen's immediate needs:
Less than a month away from her due date, Jen is not able to work the hours that would be needed to support her young family. She will also need time to recover and bond after her daughter's birth.
Your donation will buy this family groceries, diapers, bus rides, and the many incidentals that a toddler and newborn require until Jen can begin working. While Jen feels fortunate to be in a safe environment at the shelter, she and Jack only receive one free meal a day there and a small allotment of diapers.

Jen's long term objectives:
1) Secure permanent housing - Jen has been unable to find a landlord willing to rent to her, given her present circumstances. Our hope is that with a substantial deposit, she will be able to find a suitable rental for her young family. She may only stay in the shelter for up to 4 months.
2) Find employment (hospitality industry, education/childcare, administrative work) - Once Jen has secured employment, she will qualify to enter a lottery for subsidized housing. Unfortunately, obtaining a subsidized unit could take up to a year or longer.
3) Arrange childcare for her two young children - Jen has qualified for subsidized childcare, once she can show evidence of employment.
Let's help this family get back on their feet. They have lots of love and determination. All they need is us. Let's be Jen, Jack and baby girl's village...
