Most of us on the West End of Wright’s Mesa have been touched by Jennifer Long in one way or another. She has been bringing people together in the community by starting a Redvale Farm Market and Swap Meet, helping 4H kids and raising and butchering pigs for people. What most of you do not know is the rollercoaster year it has been for her. She will drop everything to help a neighbor or friend and now she needs our help. May of 2016, Jennifer suffered a heart attack and could not work, so she canned salsa. She got through that lull in finances and started raising pigs and rabbits to sell and was working on a ranch as a foreman and got all the new calf birthings done and branding and had a second heart attack and had to be flight for life’d out of Norwood. Then early spring she had a mountain lion attack and lost 5 lambs, a baby goat 30 chickens and her steer, Bully. She tried to keep a good positive attitude and pulled on her boots and kept on truckin’. She also gives riding lessons and helps kids and adults to get over their fear of horses, successfully. She has a couple of kids that were afraid of horses and now are learning barrel racing and gymkhana and horsemanship. She does this on a sliding scale for kids who cannot pay but want to learn, if they have no money she has them help with brushing and feeding the horses and teaching them.
Four years ago, Montrose County re-platted Redvale without the knowledge of the owners of the lands that were re-platted, they moved everybody’s property lines. Jennifer found out when someone bought land next door to them and it was surveyed to be 20 feet onto her property and in the middle of her kitchen. So the new land owner, took his right and put in a new mobile home and wanted to fence his yard. So, they moved their home 20 feet back to avoid the fine. Right after they moved the house, Montrose County came and said they need a foundation under the house and pulled the power box so they no longer have power, right before winter. She lost 20 feet in, the length of her property line, of land with no explanation or recourse and then they do this!
Jennifer still has rabbits, pigs, horses, cows and chickens on her property and was working on getting the foundation, but cannot live on the property during the winter, even a mild one. She is going to have to now pay rent in Nucla and drive to Redvale to feed and water, but cannot watch them at night to keep them protected. Whereas their home is paid for and she planned to use the money she is earning to put in a foundation, now she has to pay rent and try to save money to put in the foundation.
This latest event has Jennifer ready to throw in the towel. She needs our help to get her survey completed and her foundation poured. She needs our help so she can get back on her feet to help the 4H kids and raise her animals and help the community again.
She needs to survey the property to find out her new property line, move her trailer, pour a foundation, move the trailer back on to the foundation and tie it down, and reset the electrical and plumbing plus permitting. This has been estimated at $10,000.
