Jeff Hopkins, an El Paso County sheriff's deputy, lost his fight with the COVID-19 virus at the age of 41 on April 1st, 2020.

"We've honored each victim of this disease in our community. Today, we mourn one of our own. A first responder, a dedicated servant ... while we don't know how Deputy Hopkins contracted COVID-19, his death is a reminder of the risk carried by those who serve," said Susan Wheelan with El Paso County Board of Health.  "Deputy Hopkins is the first face and name of the casualties within our community."

Hopkins had worked for the sheriff's office for nearly 20 years, wearing a number of hats during that time including patrol division, floor security, and arrest control instructor. He was working intake and release at the El Paso County jail at the time of his death.

"He was an exceptional employee and he was always committed. He was always committed to the mission of the sheriff's office and he will be missed."

“My condolences go out to Deputy Hopkins’ family," Gov. Jared Polis wrote in a statement. "Deputy Hopkins spent his life serving his community and working to make our state a better place. This is an incredibly difficult time for our state, and even more so for those who have lost a loved one. Each tragic death from Coronavirus is a stark reminder of why we need to stay at home. We can’t thank our first responders and law enforcement enough for serving on the front lines, demonstrating in this crisis and every day their dedication and sacrifice.”

Jeff was a special person who was described as a "gentle giant".  He was always willing to help anyone - whether at work or in his personal life.  His friends and family appreciated his quick-witted sense of humor.   He enjoyed country music, playing poker, watching Dallas Cowboys football, and many more of life's pleasures.  Hearing the contagious laughter of his wife, Wendy, was one of those pleasures.

When Jeff found out he and Wendy would be having a baby, he was over the moon.  This was a gift they had prayed for and Jeff was thrilled.  Wendy and their unborn daughter will have a place in their hearts that cannot be filled.

Your contribution to his fund is incredibly appreciated.  Wendy will encounter many unexpected expenses now and in the future, and your support will help ease some of the burden.   Thank you!
