Our dear friend Jean-Claude has been fighting cancer for several years now. It's hard knowing how to help when someone is facing a life-threatening disease, especially when they live miles away.
Here’s his story:
In June of 2015, after months of ignoring symptoms, I realized I was sick and needed to see a doctor. I had moved back to Raleigh from D.C., and I didn’t know anyone whom I could ask for help. I was scared and worried because I knew something was wrong. As I had no friends or family in the area that I could turn to, I reached out to Sheri Pierce, a woman whom I’d dated while living in D.C. Even though I hadn’t treated her as well as I should have, and she had every right to refuse my plea, she was on a flight to Raleigh the next day, and took me to the ER. The next day I was diagnosed with rectal cancer. Sheri has been by my side ever since, driving or flying down whenever she could for nearly every one of many hospital stays over the past few years.
Over that time I fell completely in love with my angel sent from heaven. Three months ago, she quit her teaching job, leaving her friends and family behind, to come live with me and be my full-time care giver. She has sacrificed everything to take care of me. It’s been a tough battle, and I have been in chronic pain for the past 2 ½ years. If not for Sheri, I would not still be here to tell my tale.
Jean-Claude and Sheri are now married and we are very happy for them!
We all have a special connection with Jean-Claude...and have been inspired and touched by him. All of our connections are deep. Some memories result in a burst of laughter. Some memories make us think of how he reached out - through music, intellectual conversation, or being a part of personal journeys (what about the endless weddings?!). We smile...all because of Jean-Claude-isms and our desire to be a part of his life. From DC to Denver, and from Paris to Raleigh, Jean Claude is an especially extraordinary friend.
