My innocent uncle from Zambia faces 7 years Jail
I’m a German photography student with Zambian roots and this is my cry for help.
On January 8, my uncle Juma Phiri, while waiting on clients at a taxi station in Zambia, was falsely arrested and is now locked up in a 10m2 cell with other people. He is threatened to stay in jail for 7 years.
On the day my uncle got arrested, a riot was going on in my hometown Chingola. People looted, set cars on fire and broke into shops. The riot was a response to ritual killings that appear to have happened repeatedly in the town. Bounty killers are said to have attacked women and children with machetes and the police haven’t done enough to stop it.
My uncle did not partake in the riot and wasn’t even at the same location, yet he got arrested and sentenced with arson. My family was told that he has to pay a bail fee by next Monday or serve 7 years in prison. In addition, Juma and his family have to find a new place to stay. Their current home is not safe while these ritual killings are happening.
The bail fee is 15,000 Kwacha (about 915 euros). Given a local taxi driver’s income of about 60 euros per month, there is no way he can pay this. He has a daughter who depends on him to pay for living costs, food and school fees.
We are trying to raise 1,500 euros by Monday, February 3.
This equals about 25,000 Kwacha and is to make sure that Juma gets out of jail, whether it is by paying the bail fee or by paying a lawyer. And it should help the family find a safe place to stay. I have given what I can but my uncle’s freedom and my family’s future depend on more financial help. We are deeply grateful for any donations, no matter how small.

Am 8. Januar wurde mein Onkel Juma Phiri, als er an einer Taxistation in Sambia auf Kunden wartete, fälschlicherweise verhaftet und ist nun zusammen mit anderen Personen in einer 10m2 großen Zelle eingesperrt. Ihm wird gedroht, für 7 Jahre im Gefängnis zu bleiben.
An dem Tag, an dem mein Onkel verhaftet wurde, kam es in meiner Heimatstadt Chingola zu einem Aufstand. Menschen plünderten, setzten Autos in Brand und brachen in Geschäfte ein. Die Ausschreitungen waren eine Reaktion auf rituelle Morde, die in der Stadt offenbar wiederholt stattgefunden haben. Kopfgeldmörder sollen Frauen und Kinder mit Macheten angegriffen haben, und die Polizei hat nicht genug getan, um den Aufstand zu verhindern.
Mein Onkel nahm nicht an dem Aufstand teil und war nicht einmal am selben Ort, dennoch wurde er verhaftet und wegen Brandstiftung verurteilt. Meiner Familie wurde gesagt, er müsse bis nächsten Montag eine Kaution zahlen oder 7 Jahre im Gefängnis sitzen. Darüber hinaus müssen Juma und seine Familie eine neue Unterkunft finden. Ihr gegenwärtiges Zuhause ist nicht sicher, während diese Ritualmorde stattfinden.
Die Kaution beträgt 15.000 Kwacha (etwa 915 Euro). Angesichts eines lokalen Taxifahrers mit einem Einkommen von etwa 60 Euro im Monat kann er diese nicht bezahlen. Er hat eine Tochter, die von ihm abhängig ist, um die Lebenshaltungskosten, das Essen und die Schulgebühren zu bezahlen.
Wir versuchen, bis Montag, den 3. Februar, 1.500 Euro aufzubringen.
Das entspricht etwa 25.000 Kwacha und soll sicherstellen, dass Juma aus dem Gefängnis kommt, sei es durch die Zahlung der Kaution oder durch die Bezahlung eines Anwalts. Und es soll der Familie helfen, eine sichere Unterkunft zu finden. Ich habe gegeben, was ich kann, aber die Freiheit meines Onkels und die Zukunft seiner Familie hängen von mehr finanzieller Hilfe ab. Wir sind für jede noch so kleine Spende sehr dankbar.
