Jayson McLean Memorial Bursary

On August 1st, 2020, Jayson McLean passed away after sudden illness and 19 days in the ICU. He was a beloved husband, son, uncle and teacher of Theatre. As of August 2020, he was working at Production Canada as a Production Manager. Over the years, Jayson offered time and advice and mentored many Alpha Theatre students at École Alpha Secondary School where his wife, Bonnie (Veronica) Stewart taught Drama and Dance for 11 years.

Jayson loved Theatre. His first contact with theatric arts came at East York Collegiate Secondary (Toronto, Ontario). The Theatre program was the only reason that he stayed and completed high school. Jayson went on to Ryerson Polytechnical Institute (Toronto, Ontario) to graduate with a Technical Theatre Degree. He then pursued a career in Theatre Production.  Theatre lit up his life.

Throughout his career, Jayson was a long-standing member of the IATSE 118 Theatre Union and worked in many major theatre companies across Canada:

Young People’s Theatre (Toronto, Ontario)
Opera Ora Now (Toronto, Ontario)
Globe Theatre (Technical Director/Production Manager - Regina, Saskatchewan)
Acadia University (Technical Director- Wolfville, Nova Scotia)
Arts Club (Technical Director - Vancouver, BC)
2010 Olympics (Vancouver, BC)
Stratford Festival (Assistant Director of Production - Stratford, Ontario)
Capilano University (Teacher of Theatre Production - North Vancouver, BC)
University of British Columbia (Teacher of Theatre Production - Vancouver, BC)
Real Wheels Theatre, Pi Theatre, Axis Theatre, EKP Productions and Production Canada - Technical Director - Vancouver, BC)

Jayson enjoyed mentoring young students who had a love for Theatre. He wanted them to reach their potential and success in their lives through the Arts, just as he did.  To commemorate Jayson’s dedication to the Arts in his life, we are establishing a Bursary in his name for future Arts students in the Burnaby School District (41), who are pursuing their artistic passions in life.

In lieu of flowers and in honour of the families’ wishes, please consider donating to the Jayson McLean Memorial Bursary in remembrance of his life and passion for the Arts - helping to inspire and foster achievements of young artists of today.
