Hurricane Harvey Relief for Jane D

Donation protected
Dearest Friends,

We are reaching out to we have watched the events unfolding in Houston. As many of you know, our family lived there for 3 years. During that time, we made many friends, so much so, that we consider them family. This place we still consider home has been completely rocked by Hurricane Harvey. Our former neighborhood was struck by a tornado in the middle of the night last week, was affected by flooding this week and many of our former neighbors have been displaced during this difficult time.

However, I want to share with you about one special person/family in our life who will be especially challenged by this storm.  Jane Douglas, our former homekeeper (I say home because she did so much more than clean!), is the hardest working woman I know and the most loving and giving person I know. She truly became family to us.  Some of you met her in Raleigh in 2014 or in Detroit last year.

I found out on Tuesday that her family (husband, son, daughter in law and two grands) is stranded in their second floor apartment (see picture above taken from her apartment) and their only car is underwater. Because of the devastation and flooding, Jane is unable to get to her job as a housekeeper in an assisted living facility.  In her text to me, she said she was thankful to be alive and that many others are worse off than they. They have received a little food and water from her church and is cooking and sharing what they have with neighbors - that's just who she is. Jane and her family don't have much materially but she has a strong faith in Christ and a joy that is contagious.

It is hard watching the news coverage of the city at large but when I see pictures of our old neighborhood and places we used to go, it is beyond heartbreaking. We have donated to the overall relief efforts as we know many of you have, but to know personally a family who will be immediately impacted by our gift and the collective gift of others has compelled us to act in a more substantial way.  I ask that you please consider donating and no amount is too small.  100% of the funds raised will go to Jane (minus the Go Fund Me fee unless you cover that in your donation) and will be used to rebuild their lives post-Harvey.  So, if you are moved to give, please know that your gift will be greatly appreciated. God Bless and thank you on behalf of Jane and her family.
