From Haiti to College - Send James!

Donation protected
For the past five years, our friend and faithful Haitian translator, James, has had a dream of getting his college degree.

Growing up in Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, wasn’t easy. Despite all odds stacked against him, James managed to stay in school and finish high school. He taught himself English by listening to rap music and watching American movies, developing a love for linguistics in the process.

James was one year into studying translation at university in Haiti, learning his fourth language, when the devastating Haiti earthquake struck on January 12, 2010. Tragically, James lost his mom—his biggest supporter—in the earthquake. He was forced to drop out of school.

Since then, James has served numerous nonprofits and humanitarian organizations, providing highly professional translation services, and helping share the stories of his fellow Haitians with the world. He is an exceptional communicator and an all-around super fun guy to hang out with! Anyone who spends time with him is impressed by his deep understanding of Haitian culture, his sense of humor, his faith in God, and his desire to better the lives of people in Haiti.

Here’s what he wants you to know about his desire to go to college:

“I want to study communication, because this is one of my strengths. I just want to have a better future. With further education, I will be able to provide for my family, and with my knowledge and skills I will try my best to help my country.

I want to be an inspiration for other young people who have the will and strength to study in order to become something, but don’t have the means or support to pursue their dreams because the country they’re living in doesn’t encourage them.”

James needs to raise the money for school right away so he can demonstrate to Valencia College that he can pay for his education. The $24,000 goal will cover tuition, fees, and books for two years.

Update: James has recently applied to Nyack College in New York, where he hopes to receive a scholarship for Haitian students affected by the earthquake. He will still need to raise his travel and living expenses, as well as books.

With 80% of the population of Haiti living on less than $1.25 a day, it is next to impossible for James to earn or raise this money himself. He needs a miracle. Please make a donation to help James get to college and fulfill his dream of furthering his education!
