James Miller Road to Victory- #Never Give Up

Donation protected
The Miller family has recently received news that no parent ever wants to hear that their son James Miller has cancer. James was diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma.

James is a 13 year old boy who lives in Hutchinson and plans to attend HMS 8 this upcoming school year. He absolutely loves his sports and plays football, wrestles, and baseball.  He adores his teammates and coaches. Anybody who knows James knows you will never see him without a smile on his face.

James and his parents are aggressively seeking treatment options . However, there are still many unknowns. What we do know is that James will need his mom and dad to be off work for a substantial period of time because of treatment. They also will have increased medical and travel expenses.

The Millers welcome and appreciate all your love and support.  They remain strong in their faith and ask that you lift their family up in prayer during this difficult journey.

Here is a little back story from the last few months...

Towards the end of school year James started complaining about a sore throat and his mother thought it was possibly allergy related. After seeing the doctor they confirmed he had mono. Much like any kid with mono he was exhausted and slept a lot. After about 3 weeks of rest and steroids James started feeling a little better. Then all of the sudden he started noticing lumps on his neck but was feeling fine. They began noticing the lumps were growing bigger so they took him in on July 7th, to the Er where he received a CT Scan.  They thought his lymphoids were just swollen from the mono and was told to just take steroids and follow up with ENT Doctor. On July 11th, James saw Dr. Voorman.  He did a scope of his throat, ears , and tried to do one in the nose but was unsuccessful. Dr. Voorman mentioned the possibility of lymphoma. James was once again put on antibiotics and told if it gets worse to come back. On July 16th,  James mother took him back to ENT because James was starting to have a hard time breathing through his nose, snoring, having headaches, making himself throw up and sleeping for several hours. Seen by Dr. Voorman again the “lump" had more than doubled in size in less than a week. He again suggested to go to the ER because he believed it could be some sort of lymphoma but it was out of his speciality. Immediately they went to ER and had another scan done. Again the 2nd ER Doctor said there was no abscess that James had swollen lymphoids. At this time Megan felt like she was crazy and knew something was wrong just didn’t know what. Sunday July 21st , James woke up at 1:30 p.m.  in tears. He said he couldn’t keep doing this.  The “lump" had continued rapidly growing and was almost the size of a softball. They quickly got dressed and went straight to Wesley. James was so uncomfortable headed to Wichita. The Er Dr. knew something was wrong and started by giving him something for pain. She said we will definitely admit him.  The oncologist Dr. Hall came in first thing Monday the 22nd and examined him. He said he knows something's not right but not sure what it is just yet but has an idea that it possibly Burkitt lymphoma. James under went a series of blood test and Dr Hall came in once again to examine James to discover it had substantially grown in a day. He said surgery needs to be done right away. The team of surgeons then explained step by step what was to come. He was put on the schedule for surgery first thing Tuesday. After the biopsy several hours later Dr Hall came in and said there is no easy way to say it but it is the Burkitt lymphoma. Not knowing what stage with out all the pathology reports they are guessing stage 2-3 . Later that evening they were moved to ICU and a picc line was put in at midnight.  Around 230 am James started the first part of chemo. He was such a trooper. The next day was more testing. A lumbar puncture and a shot of chemo in the back. James is awaiting a PET Scan later next week meanwhile he has been released to go home u til next week.
