James Lister Family Memorial Fund

James (Jimmy) Lister died way too soon this past Giving Tuesday. He left a massive hole within his family and Salem community.

James has struggled with his health over the last few years. He contracted COVID-19 in the past month and due to underlying medical conditions he never fully recovered. His sudden death on Tuesday was tragic and unexpected.

James was a kind, compassionate, and generous person that believed in others and made people feel seen. He fiercely loved his wife Caryn (Willa) and three boys Jacob (13), Shane (10) and Tyler (10). He was a consummate host, warm hugger, storyteller, coach, front yard ball tosser, home court coach, thoughtful gift giver, volunteer, dog park conversationalist, creative Halloween costume maker, fearless dancer, car karaoke singer, lover of all humans, boxers and black cats, and the best partner in crime. He openly enjoyed a cheesy love song (and knew every word). He inspired others and could make people feel like they were the only person in the room.

James was a long-time resident of Salem and relentless mocker of all those that dared leave his beloved city.

James had a passion for helping others, supporting vulnerable youth in foster care, and helped shape an impactful child welfare system with dignity and compassion. He was a thoughtful leader and gave others the benefit of the doubt. He was well respected by those in his care, his co-workers and other leaders in the field alike, for his innovative solutions and deep commitment to those in need.

He accomplished many things professionally but was most proud of his boys and role as a father. He loved coaching their football and basketball teams. He was a spoiled fan of the New England Patriots and loved watching them win with his boys. He taught his boys a great sense of humor, to hug warmly, and to love with abandon.

No one will forget his huge smile, bear hugs and how he made you feel. His legacy will live on through his advocacy work and three boys. When asked, his boys say that time spent with their dad was their favorite part - tossing the ball, shooting hoops, making projects, and his warm welcome every morning when they walked down the stairs. Regardless of what was going on James was present, their biggest cheerleader and met them where they were at.

I love this family with my whole heart and they can’t get rid of me. Just show up for your people through the good and the bad, we all need our people in this crazy life. Your existence makes a positive impact, whether you see it or not. Thank you, thank you, thank you for showing up for The Listers now more than ever.

To support Caryn, Jacob, Shane and Tyler during this unimaginably hard time, please give in James’s honor. Any amount is greatly appreciated.

Give your people a big bear hug today and sing along to some cheesy songs for James.
