With the death of my 22 year old son after a tragic car accident I saw the need for our youth to be better educated in road safety and driving skills. They also need to know how to do car maintenance.
We don't have Driver Ed classes in our schools, and defensive driving is expensive, so I want to make this affordable if not free for our Fraser Coast Youth.
Along with an event being coordinated to raise funds we also wanted to be able to get donations from those that are unable to attend the event but wanted to support the cause.
Statistics show that
33% of Australian young drivers will have a car crash within the first 12 months of driving as a solo driver on P plates
40% of people who die on Australian roads are under the age of 25
60% of deaths among 17-25 year old is due to car accidents.
16-25 year old male drivers are 3 times more likely to die on roads then their female counterparts
Motorcyclists’ risk of a fatal crash is 35 times greater than a passenger car.
In 2016 there were 251 fatalities on Queensland’s roads of those 62 were aged 17- 25. Similar figures for 2017 and already 7 young lives have been lost this year.
No parent should have to bury a child..
Donations from the Go Fund Me and funds raised from the event will be for a Youth Driver/Rider Education Centre in Hervey Bay for the use of our Fraser Coast Youth. A Simulator with all the learner driver resources required, trained staff to educate, a basic car maintenance workshop, and driver Ed classes.
The real necessity here is to teach our kids not to just drive a car but to control it in an emergency situation and also how maintain it so it is safe to be on the road. That's what the Centre will cater for.
The sooner we get the funds the sooner we start saving lives on our roads.
I have been working with Carinity Glendyne Education to see this project develop with a successful outcome.
