Jake's Barmitzvah Project

My Barmitzvah is May 18, 2019. In the Jewish religion, a barmitzvah is seen as a milestone for becoming a man. A lot of hard work goes into this day including practicing reading from the Torah and doing mitzvahs (good deeds).
For my mitzah project, my family and I will be participating in the Philadelphia VisionWalk on October 6, in memory of my Papa Joel who passed away in 2014. While he suffered from blindness beginning at the age of 30, what we remember him most for is his love of food, "sunshine plates," the Yankees, childhood memories of Newark and his love of playing with his grandchildren where he would always take on the character of "Kid Joey" - because he truly was a kid at heart.
Even though my papa did not benefit from the research put forth towards the fight against blindness, my hope is that raising money can help others still alive that are hoping for a cure. The VisionWalk we are participating in is a signature fundraising event of the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Over 10 Million Americans are affected by blinding retinal diseases including macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa (what my papa had) and Usher syndrome. The Foundation Fighting Blindness is working to find treatments and cures for these diseases. By funding leading edge research in areas such as genetics, gene therapy, transplantation, artificial retinal implants and pharmaceutical and nutritional therapies, The Foundation Fighting Blindness is making a difference today to make the world a brighter place for those suffering with retinal degenerative diseases.
