J. Davis' Upcoming Medical Costs

Donation protected
Jaime's heart is huge and she is always looking out for others, as the sign in her house says, "Strays Gather Here." It is our turn to let Jaime know she has a strong support system.
This account is set up to help her and her family recover from her double mastectomy surgery this summer. The surgery is preventative and will be performed at Mayo.  She will be facing travel expenses, child care expenses, along with the added day-to- day expenses and difficulties. We plan to use this funding to help with meals, travel expenses along with other things that can help her road to recovery smoother.

In Jaime’s Words:

Courtney has told me that she would like to contact the staff regarding me and what I am currently going through and I'd like to let you all know a little bit about what is going on with me medically right now and over the next year or so. As some of you may know, about 6 years ago my father battled breast cancer. His diagnosis coming on the heels of my uncle also having breast cancer sparked a family study. After much work with geneticists and doctors at Mayo Clinic, it has been found that my family carries an odd form of the BRCA2 mutation (if you've read about Angelina Jolie lately-- it's the same thing-- sort of) The BRCA2 my family carries is different in that the onset of female breast cancer is early (32-34 instead of the normal 45+) and is very prevalent in men (40% instead of the normal 8%). This October I joined 16 of my 19 first cousins in learning that I carry the gene. Because of the aggressive form of this mutation I have been advised to undergo preventative surgery as soon as possible. This June I am going to be going to Mayo Clinic for a 12 hour surgery during which I will have a full double mastectomy and then surgeons will harvest skin, muscle, and fat tissue from my abdomen in order to create "new" breasts. I have been told that the recovery will be slow and difficult. I have been advised to not plan to be upright for at least 3-4 weeks and to not plan to pick up my kids until sometime in December. I will likely undergo 2-3 more follow up procedures within the next 18 months as well. This time will be long and difficult for me and my family-- but the alternative is waiting to find out I already have cancer so I will do what I can now to avoid that! I am really not shy about this at all, so if you have questions or anything, feel free to ask!
