Jade's Double-Knee Surgery

We found out on June 13, 2013 that Christie's sweet kitty Jade, has Luxating Patella (slipping kneecaps) in both knees; a congenital condition from birth. She requires surgery on both knees to correct it. One knee cap is completely out of place and cannot be manipulated back in place, and the other one is on the verge of the same fate. This is going to be an expensive procedure, and a long recovery for her. In the end though, she will be able to walk without limping or pain.

What is Luxating Patella?

Luxating Patella is a condition in which the patella (kneecap) no longer glides within its natural groove (sulcus) in the femur, the upper bone of the knee joint. During extension or flexion of the leg, the patella will luxate or slip out of the groove. It becomes displaced to the inside of the joint and can be partial or complete, intermittent or permanent.





There are four grades of patella luxation; the higher the grade means that the condition is more severe. Jade has been diagnosed with a Grade IV in her left knee, and a Grade III in the right knee. With Grade III patella luxation, the patella (kneecap) is out of the groove the majority of the time, but it can be manually pushed back into place, into the groove. With a Grade IV patella luxation, the patella (kneecap) is permanently out of the groove and cannot be manually repositioned.

Jade's surgery will be to permanently restore the kneecaps to their proper position in the femoral groove and adjust the tension of the tissues that hold them in place.

Her procedure estimate is $1848.75 at Metro Paws Animal Hospital in Dallas. It has been advised that both of her knees be operated on at the same time.








We need to get this done as soon as possible, as she is in a lot of discomfort, and has problems walking. We are also battling time, as we have no idea when the other kneecap will slip out permanently; causing total lameness in her back legs. We have pain medication for her right now, however we do not want her system to have to have endure that medication for an extended amount of time.
