Jacques Cubilié Husky Rugby Club Memorial Fund

Please join us in celebrating the life of Jacques Cubilié by donating to the Jacques Cubilié Husky Rugby Club Memorial Fund.  The Jacques Cubilié Husky Rugby Club Memorial Fund is being created to honor the memory of the founding coach of the Husky Rugby Club, Jacques Cubilié.  Jacques remained rugby-tough to the end and appreciated the sport’s ability to foster the character-building attributes of persistence, teamwork, and leadership.   The Husky Rugby Club continues to exemplify the founding principles that Jacques worked to instill in the first years of the team.  The fund will be used to support student athletes who share Jacques’s love of rugby, his sense of adventure, and his persistence in the face of adversity. Jacques’s devotion to family extended to his rugby family, his belief in the game, and his understanding of importance of education in building tomorrow’s next generation of rugby-tough leaders.

Coach Cubilié (1930 –2020) immigrated to the U.S. from southwestern France in 1952, having played for the Rugby Union team of Lavelanet, France, among others. Having completed his military service in West Africa, and wanting more adventure, he moved to Salem, OR without speaking English, taking jobs picking berries and working in a dry cleaners. In his free time, he climbed mountains throughout the Cascades and was an enthusiastic and committed member of alpine search and rescue.  Jacques eventually became a dental technician and started his own business.

After moving to Seattle in the early 1960s, Jacques heard about the newly forming, rag-tag UW Rugby Club and went to watch them play one of their first games in 1963. In the words of one of those first players, his life-long friend James Decker, Jacques watched the team “sorely lose”. Following the match, when asked his opinion, in his straight-forward style Jacques let the players know that “they certainly needed a lot of help”. Thus, Jacques was nominated as/asked to become the first Coach of the club.  He was honored to coach the club in its opening years, and as his players graduated, he moved on with them to become the founding President of the Seattle Rugby Club. Today, in honor of the founding of the Club, the annual Oregon/Washington match is designated the Cubilié Cup.

Please join us in honoring, Jacques’s memory, the hard work and dedication of generations of players, and of the generations to come by donating to support the ongoing growth of the Husky Rugby Club.

All donations are tax-deductible and go directly to the Jacques Cubilié Memorial Fund of the Husky Rugby Alumni Association to be used for player support and club development.
