Last night at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale Arizona at 7:40 pm my mother, Dr. Sarah Weiner, MD passed away peacefully at age 91. She was blessed with 5 grandchildren, Jonathan, Lauren, and Jared Zabel from her daughter Jackie, and Zack and Jeremy Reynard from her daughter Melinda. In her lifetime, there was nothing more important to her than education. She earned her medical degree before women went into medicine and besides raising two daughters completely on her own and paying for their education, she also funded all five grandchildren’s educations.
While she has been in Arizona, she had the privilege of having one of the most loving and attentive caregivers we could have ever dreamt of. Yolanda took so much of her time away from her family to care tirelessly for my mother. In the same fashion as my mother, she is solely responsible for supporting her two sons. She is now without a job. Yolanda’s son, Jacob, who lives in Mesa came to the hospital to be there to support his mom last night and hugged me in the hospital room shortly after my mom passed away and whispered in my ear that it is because of her that he is going to college. She had that big of an impact on everyone she knew AND trust me, she did not take NO for an answer. In her memory and in her honor I am setting up this page for friends and family who are asking where to make a donation. I know nothing would make Sarah more happy and proud than to put money towards Jacob’s education, He is currently attending Mesa Community college but wants to attend ASU full time next year and become a teacher. What better way to pass it forward than embracing the noble profession of teaching. He works part time but also has had to overcome post traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety disorders in his lifetime. He fights these demons everyday. My mother held a strong presence in his life( as she did in my lifetime) and over the seven years Yolanda spent attending to my mother during her final years. In lieu of flowers or sending food, please consider making a small anonymous contribution for the education of this fine young man. Nothing would make myself, his mother or my mother more proud than to have him graduate and be able to support himself in the future. She gave all of us in my family the “push” to push ourselves to study and the gift of a good educaton. I hope and pray that together we can honor her legacy by helping Jacob climb his own ladder. Thank you so much for reading and contributing as much or as little as you wish. Lots of love is being sent out from a very grateful and grieving daughter. Tomorrow we all fly to Israel to fulfill her wish of being buried in the cemetery next to her parents in the small town where she was born, Hadera, Israel. Thank you.
Enclosed are images from her 90th birthday celebration.
