Hi everyone, I’m starting this fundraiser for my friend Angel. Angel is a 23-year-old Latin brown trans woman who immigrated from Mexico five years ago. She moved to Toronto to afford to transition in a safer environment, escape an abusive family, and go to school.
During her time in Canada, she sustained herself through sex work. This was a traumatizing experience for her, however, because of her status in the country she had limited options for work. Because of the disruptions in the sex work industry due to covid and her mental health, going back into sex work isn’t an option for her anymore.
For the past year, she has been in a precarious situation with her visa status. She’s spent hundreds of dollars on legal fees and countless hours fighting to stay in the country. But despite her efforts, she is running out of options and money to support herself.
As Angel isn’t able to return home, where she feels unsafe and has no support network, her last option is to call on support from others. I’m particularly calling on support from white and non-queer people who, for the most part, never have to fear being destabilized and forcefully removed from this country.
I’ve known Angel for over a year, and I have seen her dealing with this massive situation almost fully on her own. I’ve seen first-hand how intensely stressful and scary this is and I really really encourage people within her networks to consider supporting her throughout this.
This is the breakdown of how she will be using the funding:
Medical Debt: $1,000
Dental Work: $3,000
Ongoing medical expenses for 6 months: $800
Rent, food, and living expenses: 8,400
