Selfless Mom Now Needs Help Herself- Rhonda and Mike Burke
My mom is the kind of mom that would do anything for us kids, even dropping whatever she was doing in order to come help out and assist however we need her to. Several years ago when I was diagnosed with breast cancer she moved in with me and my children for a couple of months to help me out with my children and my household while I continued to work part-time and go through treatment. She made sure I had a hot meal waiting for me when I got home from work and when I was too sick from the treatment to do much except lay in bed, she would read bedtime stories to my kids and help get them up and ready for school.
A couple of months ago, she came to live with my sister, Rachel, in Wixom to help her out with her children because she was going through marital and financial difficulties and she didn’t have the means to maintain rent on her apartment and pay for childcare. My mom being the wonderful person and mom that she is has been the daily childcare provider to my sister’s children: Carter-who is 3 years old and Ariana- who is 8 months old.
Thanksgiving weekend my mom started getting sick with what at first she just thought was a cold or the flu. Within days she was so sick she couldn’t even get out of bed. My sister took her to the Emergency Room where they immediately admitter her into ICU. The doctors told us that she was very close to death when we brought her in. She was diagnosed with respiratory failure, Influenza A, pneumonia in both her lungs, and sepsis. On top of that when she got to the hospital her white blood cell count was so low that she basically had no immune system.
She has been fighting for her life in ICU for over three weeks now and the doctors say it could be more than a month before she is home since she has to go to a convalescent home when she leaves the hospital in order to fully heal. Her platelets remain too low after numerous transfusions. She was on a ventilator for almost two weeks and she now has a tracheotomy, a feeding tube and some other not so fun things to share….
My mom doesn’t have insurance and my father has been by her side almost the whole time. We are not sure how much all the medical care is going to cost but we are asking for any help you are willing and able to provide. My father is not working right now so that he can be by my mother’s side. My parents’ home is a couple hours away from the hospital where my mom is being treated so this adds additional costs for food and gas for my father.
Thank you to my Dad for letting us borrow our mom whenever we needed her with little to no complaint. We are truly blessed with kind, loving and giving parents!
Thanks for whatever support you are able to provide, God bless you! Prayers are always appreciated.
