The below was written by my friend and fellow Cursillista, Ross Provenzano...

As many of you know, Chris ‘Hank’ Hahnke ( an engineer, MBA and avid outdoorsman) who has been a
parishioner at Saint Brigid’s and a Cursillista for many of his 58 years is suffering from the incurable disease known as Huntington’s disease, which progressively debilitates one’s ability to control the muscular functions of their entire body.

Chris has been an inspiration to all of us as he remained an Usher at Sunday Mass and proudly received the Eucharist, even though his disability was getting to a
point of serious instability.

Recently he hasn’t been able to get himself showered and clothed in the mornings in time for Sally and I to pick him up to attend daily 7:30am Mass. The facility that he was living in was not equipped to give him this level of assistance and frankly was NOT a place that any of us would want a loved one to live.

With the help of Fr. Steve, Katie Brown and I found a 6 bed home, run by a husband and wife, which is located in Linda Vista. They have accepted Chris as a resident! I moved him into the facility last Sunday. It is clean, offers home cooked meals, has two other men as residents who are close to Chris’ age and has committed to getting Chris up and ready to go in the mornings, so he can again attend the 7:30am daily Mass.

His executors, who live in Michigan, decided to place Chris in this facility, which gives him an opportunity to enjoy a higher level of care and comfort. This however comes at a price that is approximately $20,000 a year more than his Social Security allowance. The only other option was to place him in Edgemoor Hospital in Santee, which was quite a distance away from Chris’ friends and fellow parishioners here at St. B’s and was upsetting to Chris when presented that option.

I have agreed to assist Chris’ executors, in an effort to raise the shortfall of funds from donations from his parish and Cursillo family and benefactors. The only family Chris has is a brother, who is also suffering from this heredity disease and is in a facility in Michigan. He has no remaining assets and is entirely dependent upon his SS and the generosity of friends.

Please join me in this Christmas Season and make a donation for the benefit of Chris’ care. Any amount
will help and the entire amount will go directly to Chris.

God Bless you all…..This is an opportunity to do Christ’s work!
