In 2011, I was diagnosed with stargardts macular dystrophy. This is a juvenile form of macular degeneration. I visited specialists in Fargo, ND and at they Mayo clinic in Rochester, MN. I was told there is no cure and that I would keep losing my vision.
Last February, I was 21 years old and diagnosed as being legally blind. In May I had to renew my drivers license and chose not to due to my decreasing vision. This was very hard for me because I am a very independent, young woman.
Regular glasses do not help with this condition. There are a few doctors across the United States that specialize in glasses that use telescopic and microscopic technology that is able to help people with low vision who have been told nothing with help them see.
This fund is to help raise the money to make the trip to a low vision specialist from Minneapolis. The appointment is not covered by insurance because it is considered to be an extra part of a regular eye exam. The appointment itself is $220. The glasses cost anywhere from $700-3000. They are also not covered by insurance.
Please se help me in regaining my independence and help make dealing with becoming legally blind much easier! I would LOVE to have the possibility to maybe drive again, to watch a sporting event, watch tv, read again normally, and recognize a face from across the room!
