IWPS Convergence on Pine Ridge

This is a call to action! Please help support the Indigenous Wisdom & Permaculture Skills Convergence in it's 2nd year!
Located on Pine Ridge Reservation, the sovereign nation of the Oglala Lakota people, IWPS Convergence works to amplify the initiatives of tribal organizations who collaborate to address food scarcity, poverty, and lack of adequate housing. We understand the Lakota can help their own community best - that's why we only support existing Lakota initiatives that will be maintained after the convergence ends.
Volunteers from across the nation gather together with renowned ecological teachers and tribal leaders for one week. Side by side, attendees acquire ecologically-minded skills through hands-on experiences - building appropriate technologies like rainwater catchment systems, solar cooking devices, fuel-efficient rocket stoves, aquaponics, and food forestry to name a few! They also participate in workshops like Garden Design, Decolonization, or Direct Action, that empower them as leaders to take on the environmental and social justice challenges of today.
Every donation, small or large helps us reach our goal of creating a meaningful event! Here's how your donation will be used:
Project Materials - we prioritize up-cycled, reused, low cost and abundant materials for projects. The main projects for IWPSC 2018 are:
Construction of the Indigenous Wisdom Center: a Lakota language school and cultural center. Construction is already underway in partnership with OLCERI and Engineers Without Borders. We would like to raise the walls and begin the timber work during the convergence.
Passive Solar Dehydrator - to be donated to a local community garden to assist in food preservation.
Outdoor Rocket Stove with Thermal Mass Heated Bench
Garden Design Mini-PDC course - taught by international permaculture designers Jillian Hovey and Koreen Brennan.
Clean Energy System - Our host site eco-ranch OLCERI has the potential to become 100% off-grid by the time of the convergence! In order to make this possible, we hope to raise $1,600 to buy batteries for the existing solar panel and wind turbine systems.
Payment for Teachers and Special Guests - Our diverse group of teachers is coming out as a community service, without asking for much in return. We plan to pay for their fuel and would like to offer them an honorarium for their work. We also are expecting elders, a tribal chairperson, and a special guest who works in tandem with the United Nations. Examples of teachers and their offerings include - Afia Walking Tree and her Drum Mobile to teach West African style drumming, Wynona Katso from Cheyenne River Reservation to teach Wild Foraging, Nate Etsitty from the Dine Reservation teaching Rainwater Catchment and Food Security Movements.
Community Meals - We are pleased to partner with Denver Food Not Bombs this year as our cooks! They have graciously stepped up to serve food as volunteers. We would like to pay them and have ample funds for food. The convergence is free to all Pine Ridge residents, who are encouraged to stop by and have a meal, so we will need extra food on hand.

OLCERI (Oglala Lakota Cultural and Economic Revitalization Initiative)
A center for higher indigenous education that uses permaculture practices, their mission is to restore resilience, self-sufficiency, economic independence, and cultural revitalization among the Lakota on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation while sharing our knowledge and research with other communities seeking assistance. OLCERI has created a demonstration site for long-term sustainable practices rooted in permaculture, holistic land management, and the Lakota culture. Adaptable systems including food security, education, natural building and housing, cottage industry, environmental stewardship, historic artifact repatriation and more will be the resource for implementation of programs to serve the Pine Ridge community and beyond.

Tiyospaye Winyan Maka
For over 15 years, Tiyospaye Winyan Maka, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, has created sustainable housing on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Starting with the late, beloved Muriel Ashmore, founder of Tiyospaye Crisis Center and more recently, Christinia Eala, founder of Winyan Maka, two small agencies have merged to promote sustainable housing, renewable energy, as well as nutritional and educational sovereignty for Indigenous families.

Rebel Earth Farms and ReMember
Together with OLCERI, these 2 nonprofit groups are busy creating a Food Distribution Network across the reservation, with a focus on education. Each site serves a unique demographic: trauma, age design, or veteran care for example, which adds to the overall resilience of the reservation.
