Tom Grogan was hospitalized in February after a bad fall in his trailer home. It seems that after three decades of sobriety, Tommy had relapsed. The fall punctured a lung and Tommy was fighting for his life. He was in very bad shape.
Tommy's cousins, niece and nephews became his advocates as his health prognosis wasn't good. He was on ventilator support and had a tracheotomy to assist with his breathing. A feeding tube was also needed. Amazingly, Tommy slowly began to recover with the support and care of the hospitals and health rehab facilities. He had the trach removed last month. He has begun to regain his strength after being bedridden for over 3 months with daily physical therapy. After 4 months in various medical facilities, Tommy is ready to go home and begin his AA program again.
The next challenge is finding a safe permanent shelter. Tommy's trailer home has been certified uninhabitable by 2 remediation experts. 4 months of humidity and leaks have created a moldy toxic shell that was once Tommy's home for years. We are working with social services to find a suitable apartment in Destin. It's not been easy navigating resources with the COVID-19 pandemic and his family living in other states. Tommy learned yesterday that he can stay at the Destin Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center and pay rent for a few more months which gives us some time to find a new home.
We are raising money to help Tommy pay his medical bills, pay the deposit on an apartment, and get some clothes, necessities and basic furniture. Nothing in the trailer is salvageable. Tommy has to start from scratch which is tough at 73. Funds raised will be used to pay the above mentioned items directly with oversight by the family.
Tommy is one of the good guys. He has touched many people with his kindness and good heart. We all love him and want him to enjoy the rest of his days healthy, happy and safe.
