Marvin Jack Marinovich
You likely know him simply as ‘Marv’.
Whether you got to know Marv as a teammate at Santa Monica College (1958 National JC Champions), USC (1962 National Champions), or with the LA Rams or Oakland Raiders; training with him as a pro-, college-, or high school-athlete; or field-, court-, or pool-side somewhere, eating a handful of dried fruits and nuts; I’m sure that you or someone close to you came away from that meeting with a higher Physical IQ (Performance Quotient) ― faster, more powerful, quicker, more graceful, and overall better prepared for success in your sport than ever before. And very likely, at little expense (at least, monetarily).
Marv is one of the most unique people in the world, and perhaps one of the most misunderstood. Headlines sometimes read, “Off His Friggin' Rocker…or Genius?”. While we may not have realized it then, we all have trained and played ahead of the curve, because of Marv and his training methodologies. So, I guess, we know the answer, “Genius.”
As Troy Polamalu put it, "He's (Marv’s) been doing the same thing for 30 or 40 years. People are just now starting to evolve to his training methods. He's been above and beyond when it comes to a strength-training coach." I think that all of us who trained with Marv would agree that his training methods were on the cutting edge. As important, is the confidence that he instilled in his athletes. Marv believed, "You're ready to dominate," and as a result we believed, as well.
Tougher than nails, stronger than steel, a superhuman resolve, and yet he would reveal a softer side that showed what really drove him ― his passion for enabling his athletes to reach new heights and achievements, witnessed in the look in his eyes (slightly tearing) when he learned that one of his athletes had dominated his/her opponent or sport ― our success.
Today, Marv is contending (officially) with “dementia with behavioral disturbance, moderate to severe, possibly due to Alzheimer's disease and/or multiple sports-related concussions,” and getting-around is difficult due to the condition of his knees. Thankfully, Marv is well cared for at Good Samaritan Guest Home (26972 Via Grande, Mission Viejo, CA 92691), where he lives currently, and would be thrilled to receive your note, etc.
While Marv receives Social Security benefits of $1,200/Month and a small NFL pension ($44/Month), chasing his life-long passion for training athletes in all sports took precedence over retirement planning, and he currently realizes a shortfall of about $4,000/Month for long-term care costs at Good Samaritan.
So, I’m asking on behalf of a championship football player, world-class performance coach (who I suspect is in many ways responsible for the success of several of us), a guy who wouldn’t ask for himself, and at the end of the day, our friend, Marv, if you will join me by “paying it back,” and contributing to Marv’s long-term health care. We’re setting a goal initially for one-year’s care at Good Samaritan plus four months currently past due ($64,000), and have set-up this GoFundMe account, www.gofundme.com/Iron-Marv.
