IOC Presents: The Queen of Spades

The pieces of the puzzle:
.
A countess with an old secret. An obsessed officer. A supernatural encounter. A bet gone wrong. Thirty singers. One dancer. Live music. Four performances.
.
.
These are just a few of the components that are part of Independent Opera Company's upcoming production of Tchaikovsky's  "Queen of Spades" (sung in Russian) and we need your help to put the pieces of this puzzle together for the final production of our fifth season this summer!

Rehearsals begin in early May for four performances which will take place at Protection of The Holy Virgin Russian Orthodox Church (in the Russian Hall)  on June 23, 24, 30 and July 1.

What is Independent Opera Company?
Formed in the summer of 2012 by Founding Artistic Director, Galina Barskaya, Independent Opera Company (IOC) is a Los Angeles-based non-profit organization that serves all of Southern California. It has been committed to producing high quality productions at affordable prices to the community.

IOC explores a wide range of operas varying in style, period, and country. Young and seasoned singers, including children's choruses, work together in harmony to give audiences a chance to experience the magical and transformative power of opera!

In the last five years, IOC has presented well-loved operas such as Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors, Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann, and Lehar's The Merry Widow.

What sets IOC apart from other opera companies?
IOC prides itself on tackling rarely performed works, such as Britten's Midsummer Night's Dream and Granados' Goyescas. Most importantly, IOC proudly presents Russian operas sung in Russian, which are rarely performed in Los Angeles. Past Russian operas that IOC has presented include Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, Rachmaninoff's Aleko and Rimsky-Korsakov's The Tsar's Bride.

IOC also invites professional choreographers, dancers and musicians to be onstage in many of IOC's productions, including our upcoming "Queen of Spades". This makes for a more unusual and complete experience for our audiences.

What is "Queen of Spades"?
Queen of Spades is an opera in three acts with music composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to a Russian libretto written by his brother Modest Tchaikovsky.

Yes, you read that correctly, Tchaikovsky ²!

The synopsis is based on a short story written by Alexander Pushkin in 1833. "Queen of Spades" addresses the consequences of greed, and forces you to question reality vs. the supernatural.

The opera follows officer Hermann who hears the tale of an elderly countess who was able to win a fortune with the secret of three winning cards. Hermann becomes obsessed with the tale and is determined to discover the secret and win a fortune for himself.

Why we need your help
Over the past five years, IOC has continued to grow at a fast pace. Each production includes more elaborate staging, costumes, sets and highly skilled artists of various disciplines including musicians, singers, dancers and, most recently, costume and set designers.

“Queen of Spades” includes a cast of 30+ artists as well as a brand new venue. We have also added 2 extra performances for the first time in 2 years.

In order to supplement the needs and cost of production for “Queen of Spades” we ask for your support.

What We Ask of You
Our goal is to raise $5500  by June 22, 2017. This will allow us to create the full operatic experience that we want to present to our audience. Your tax deductible contribution of $5, $10, $50, $100 or more allows us to complete our fifth season by giving back to the artists that are hard at work in making this production possible and to our community by producing this rare full length opera, presenting it at low cost.
