The Annie Walsh Memorial School (AWMS) is an all-girls secondary school in Freetown, Sierra Leone, established in 1849. It is the oldest girls’ secondary school in Sub-Saharan Africa. Over the years, the school has consistently attained high academic achievements, making it one of the most prestigious secondary schools in Sierra Leone. The school has six houses, named after past principals.
Miss Pole served as the 12th Principal of the Annie Walsh Memorial school (1930 -1954).
The Annie Walsh Old Girls’ Association UK Branch (AWOGA UK) was founded in 1984 and registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales on 19th January 2016, Charity Number 1165222.
Various events and activities are organised each year to assist and support school projects in Freetown to maintain its status of academic excellence.
AWOGA UK has funded the following:
- student scholarships
- refurbishment and maintenance of The School Chapel
- construction of the Elk Street perimeter wall
Donations from The Association have included:
- classroom materials and furniture
- equipment for the Biology, Chemistry and Physics labs
- materials and equipment to the Agriculture Department
- computers which are in use in the administrative office
- contributions towards the setting up of a resource centre
Covid-19 has affected us all in various ways and for AWOGA UK, it has meant the cancellation of all community fundraising events. Therefore, The Association has identified alternative fundraising initiatives to enable continued support of ongoing projects such as annual student scholarships.
