What is the Indigo Shade Map ?
Indigo Shade Map archives and shares stories about indigo in the world. It includes various types of indigo plants, dye traditions, and cultures. Both traditional wisdom from ancestors and contemporary cultures of textiles will be presented through an online visual map and printed publication. It was originally created by visual artist, indigo dyer & grower, Rosa Sung Ji Chang, in 2017.
This initiative started as a way to map the use of three different kinds of indigo grown around the world, Indigofera tinctoria, Polygonum tinctorium, and Woad. Each indigo plant is marked with a corresponding shade of blue on the map. Indigo dye is an ancient dye found in textile traditions practiced by various cultures around the world.
The main purpose of the Indigo Shade Map is to show how one particular natural dye is still widely and continuously practiced today. Each indigo plant visually looks very different and grows in diverse climates and regions. Although these plants contain “blue pigments” in their leaves, each shade produced is different. These powerful plants weave together many lives and peoples in complex textile history to better connect one another. Please check our website indigoshademap.org
What Do We Need?
Our Indigo Shade Map team is dedicated to the research of various indigo producing plant strains, documentation of its history, and their cultivation worldwide. We have so far documented around 60 strains of indigo producing plants and are committed to listing so many more strains.
Not only researching indigo, but we are also dedicated to creating arts and events inspired by indigo, natural dye, and cultural traditions.
Next Steps
- Expanding the researched strains of indigo by continuously researching and inputting data on the map.
- Connecting and supporting people who are in love with indigo including dyers, growers, suppliers on a global level by providing an online space as well as a directory/resource page on the main web page.
- Publishing our first periodical artistic magazine about indigo, natural dye, and cultures
- Printing poster format Indigo Shade Map
- Collaborating & supporting local and emerging artists to create indigo/natural dye/cultural traditions inspired arts and fun items such as limited-edition goods, web content, film and beyond together
