Amazon indigenous library and visitor facilities

Dear friends,

My name is Adriana Meirelles and for over 3 years, I’ve been working with the Tururukari-uka indigenous community, who live in the Brazilian Amazon forest.

Several big, new ventures are now underway for which we need support.

The project is to create an indigenous library, an indigenous gallery to display and sell community craftwork, and some rooms with facilities so the village can receive visitors and student groups. We are also planning to self publish a book about the community, written and illustrated by them. This book will tell their history, share their culture and knowledge about the forest they live in.

All of these will be a great help to the women’s craft collective, the kids at the indigenous school, and the community as a whole. It will help the Tururukari-uka towards financially security. It will also provide an opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the traditions and the sustainable lifestyle of this community.

The indigenous library will be the only one in the region, and 8 other indigenous villages from the surrounding area will benefit from it.

Some dear friends are helping with this fundraising. They’re organizing an amazing "Log Carry" run on the 25th of May 2024.

This will happen on the same day in Bristol in the UK, and in Campinas and the Amazon in Brazil, with three communities running together, in a joint effort to help the forest people to keep the rainforest steady and strong.

Meu nome é Adriana Meirelles e, há mais de 3 anos, trabalho com a comunidade indígena Tururukari-uka, que vive na floresta amazônica brasileira.

Estamos agora envolvidos em novas atividades e precisamos de apoio.

Nosso novo projeto é construir uma série de coisas: uma biblioteca indígena, uma galeria de arte indígena com loja de artesanatos da comunidade, e também acomodações para que a aldeia possa receber visitantes e grupos de estudantes.

Esse apoio será de grande ajuda para as crianças da escola indígena, para o coletivo de artesanato feminino e para a comunidade como um todo.

A biblioteca indígena será a única da região, e outras 8 aldeias dos arredores se beneficiarão dela.

Com as acomodações, a aldeia Tururukari-uka, proporcionará uma oportunidade para que visitantes mergulhem em suas tradições e cultura, e tenham um contato profundo com a floresta Amazônica.

Alguns amigos queridos estão ajudando na arrecadação destes fundos e criamos juntos um desafio divertido: uma incrível corrida de toras no dia 25 de maio de 2024.

Essa corrida acontecerá no mesmo dia em Bristol, no Reino Unido, em Campinas e na Amazônia, no Brasil, com jovens das três comunidades correndo em um esforço conjunto para ajudar os povos da floresta a manterem a floresta firme e forte.
