Indaro Family Rwanda

"Indaro" is Swahili word which means a place to live, and in our case it's a safe home for children and teenagers who were previously living on the streets or whose parents cannot take care of them. Indaro Family also provides different arts, sports and educational activities that guide these kids towards a better future.
Normally, the Indaro family is supported exclusively by Erick Cyabahiro who heads a successful company that does artistic direction for large wedding parties and events. Since march 21st, Rwandans have been in quarantine and unable to work. While some people can now start working, events and sports activities are still not permitted. There is no welfare for the many freelancers/entrepreneurs who are not permitted to work in these times, and the food rations are inadequate. There are currently 17 children in Ericks care.

Erick Cyabahiro
Erick could not face abandoning these children to the streets despite having no income himself, so him and some of the childrens' dance/art teachers have started fundraising to be able to pay their rent, buy food, and take care of basic needs such as clothing and school fees. They have been able to raise around 1500 already, which got them through the first month.
Here are some examples of prices in Rwanda in USD for the things that we need for the Indaro family:
1. $ 100 > 1 month rent
2. $ 500 > basic food for 1 month for Indaro Family (3 nutritious meals and clean water for 17 children)
3. $ 36 > primary school fees/student/year
4. $ 100 > secondary school fees/student/year
5. $ 600 > university school fees/student/year
6. $ 65 > will cover scholastic materials in both primary and secondary school for 1 student/year
7. $120 > medical insurance 17 children/year
8. $ 300 > funds for 5 arts teachers/month
9. $ 55 > one counselling session (such as trauma relief for a child and their parents)
10. $300 > a set of clothes + shoes for 17 children
These are the costs for the most basic necessities. We are currently living with many people in a small house. It would be ideal to have more space, multiple sets of clothes for each child, etc.
Now I will let you know more specifically about what we do in the Indaro family.
For educational support, children are helped with their daily school routine and introduced to basic numeracy, literacy, computer skills and English, as well as music (we have guitars, percussion and piano,) dance (traditional and urban,) and leadership and teamwork skills.
To help the kids integrate into their new family structure and get moral support, they are taught a new value each week which they have to implement during the different household tasks that they perform.
To help the kids psychologically, we identify the reasons that the child was living on the street in the first case and then organize sessions with counsellors, either alone or with their family.
Finally, their health is taken care of. Over the past three months we have had 6 cases of malaria, 6 cases of teeth disorders, 2 problems with tonsils, 2 cases of intestinal parasites, 2 cases of skin disorders, and one fracture.
We want to transform the lives of these children by meeting their basic and psychosocial needs, providing them with education and skills, and training them to become valuable members of society.
