In support of Jeong's widow and children

Dear fellow Ottawans and Korean Canadians,

As many of you already know, Youngkwon Jeong (45) was found dead in his car around 7pm, June 12th. He was apparently on duty as an Uber driver, and it was a heart attack that took him by surprise. He left behind his beloved wife (Myunghee Seo, 45) and two daughters (A. Jeong (13) and S. Jeong (12)) in Canada, and his parents (Woojong Jeong (80) and Chaesuk Lim (74)) in South Korea.

Youngkwon was a new immigrant here in Canada. Youngkwon’s family received Canadian Permanent Residency last year and moved to Canada nine months ago. He had worked as a banker for almost 20 years in South Korea, but he had long wanted to immigrate to Canada because he believed this would allow him a better work-life balance and provide his two young daughters with a better education and a better future. This is how the family took a plane to Canada, from their home country that is thousands of miles away, with much excitement about this new chapter in their life.

Youngkwon however is gone now. It has been only nine months since he landed. He was a planner and wanted to prepare himself better for the job market while continuing to serve as the breadwinner for his family. He spent a lot of time studying English, while driving Uber at night to pay the bills. However, from now on none of his family members will be able to take an Uber without thinking about Youngkwon.

We are writing to ask for your help. We hope our fellow Ottawans and Korean Canadians can help Youngkwon’s family left behind to settle down here in Ottawa. The children have lost their loving father, but we hope that we as a community can help them live the life that their father had long desired for them in this new country. His wife Myunghee is in despair, but at the same time she is determined to overcome this tragedy, to set a new path, and to do the best she can for the children. She has been a housewife since the second child was born, but she used to work in financial securities in South Korea. We believe that a bit of financial support will provide her with the time and space she needs to deal with emotions in such a difficult time, and then to re-educate herself, to re-enter the job market, and eventually to stand on her own two feet. 이미 많은 분들이 알고 계시겠지만, 지난 6월 12일 저녁 7시경, 정영권(45세)씨가 그의 차 안에서 주검으로 발견되었습니다. 당시 우버 운전 중이었던 것으로 알려졌고, 갑작스러운 그의 사인은 심장마비였던 것으로 보입니다. 그는 캐나다에 그의 사랑하는 아내 서명희씨(45세)와 두 딸아이(12, 13세)를, 또 한국에 연로한 부모님(정우종(80세), 임채숙(74세))을 뒤로하고 떠났습니다.

정영권씨는 캐나다의 신참 이민자였습니다. 영권씨의 가족은 작년에 캐나다 영주권을 받았고, 9개월전 캐나다에 왔습니다. 그는 한국에서 20년 가까이를 은행원으로 일했지만, 오랜기간 캐나다 이민을 원했었다고 합니다. 캐나다로의 이민이 그에게는 일과 삶의 건강한 균형을, 아이들에게는 더 나은 교육과 더 나은 미래를 가져다 줄 것으로 믿고 있었기 때문입니다. 이것이 영권씨의 가족이 그들에게 펼쳐질 새 삶에 대한 부푼 마음을 안고 수천마일 떨어진 조국에서 캐나다행 비행기에 몸을 실은 이유였습니다.

그러나 영권씨는 이제 이곳에 없습니다. 캐나다 땅에 발을 디딘지 겨우 9개월만의 일입니다. 그는 계획있게 움직이는 사람이었고, 가장으로서의 책임을 다하면서도 보다 잘 준비해서 고용시장에 나가길 원했습니다. 부족한 영어 공부에 많은 시간을 할애했지만, 밤에는 생활을 위해 우버 운전을 했습니다. 그렇지만 이제는 영권씨 생각이 나서 가족들 어느 누구도 다시는 우버를 탈 수 없을 것만 같습니다.

여러분들의 도움이 필요합니다. 오타와에 계시는 여러분들 그리고 캐나다 동포 교민 여러분들께서 남은 영권씨의 가족이 이곳 오타와에 잘 정착할 수 있도록 도와주시기를 부탁드립니다. 아이들은 사랑하는 아빠를 잃었지만, 아빠가 아이들에게 선사하고자 했던 이 나라에서의 새로운 삶을 용기내어 그대로 이어갈 수 있도록 한마음으로 힘을 보태어 주시길 바랍니다. 영권씨의 아내 서명희씨는 큰 고통 속에 있지만, 동시에 이 슬픔을 이겨내고 새 길을 열어 아이들을 위해 최선을 다하겠다는 의지도 함께 다지고 있습니다. 명희씨는 둘째 아이가 태어난 이후 가정주부로 살아왔지만 이전에는 한국의 증권사에서 일한 경험이 있습니다. 여러분들의 소소한 금전적인 도움이 그녀가 이 힘든 시기에 마음을 추스릴 약간의 여유, 그 후 고용시장 재진입을 위한 얼마간의 재교육의 시간을 가져다 줄 수 있을 것이라 생각합니다. 그리고 여러분들의 도움을 밑거름으로 명희씨는 이땅에 두 발을 스스로 딛고 설 수 있을 것입니다. 감사합니다.
