In memory of Paul Daniel Johnson, his sisters are fundraising for a memorial park bench at Chelsea Park in Exeter so that when they visit it they are reminded of all the loving expressions of sympathy and support from Paul's friends and family. Thank you for celebrating Paul's life with us.

Paul Daniel Johnson, 37, of Voluntown, CT, precious son, brother, uncle, nephew and friend, passed away peacefully Thursday afternoon (Jan 21, 2021) at Backus Hospital, CT, after a sudden illness surrounded by his loving family.  Born February 4, 1983 in Austin, Texas, he was the son of the late Douglas Paul Johnson and Louise Ellen (Boone) Johnson whom he loved dearly. Paul was passionate about music and after graduating from Chariho High School he helped others enjoy it to the max as an audio technician. He especially loved acoustic guitar and electronic house music played by full orchestras. Paul was a foodie and an entertainer, his love of cooking for family and friends led to him being a chef for several restaurants over his career. Most recently, Paul was pursuing a career in the design of luxury clothing using his mother’s sewing machine.

Paul loved photography like his creative mom, and spent many happy times traveling around and taking photos of RI’s beauty, where he lived into his 30’s. Bonnet Shores Beach, Narragansett Beach and Point Judith Country Club were his three favorite places in Rhode Island. Paul loved to laugh, make others laugh, and to watch and cheer up others with sketch comedies. A multi talented and accomplished person, Paul was planning for the future and recently celebrated his second year anniversary as a nonsmoker. He wanted to be a father someday and looked forward to teaching his young nieces and nephews how to play the guitar.

Paul was an athlete and loved to play golf, basketball and racquetball.  He also loved to snowboard and was the originator of the “snow report,” a fun twist on a weather report, where you record yourself saying things about the quality of the snow as you travel downhill or ride the lifts. Paul was an artist and loved painting and woodworking, he made beautiful engravings in wood to give to family and friends.

Paul was a man of Christian faith. As his illnesses progressed, he was no longer able to maintain his once close relationship with God. However, he said that he never stopped believing in God and the Bible. Paul believed that after you die you feel no pain and are conscious of nothing (Ecclesiastes 9:5) and that the Bible holds a hope for a paradise earth in the future.

Paul experienced the joy of dating and being married to his high school sweetheart, Megan Cole, for 9 years; although divorced, they stayed friends and wanted each other to be happy. Paul is survived by and will be loved forever by his sisters and their spouses, Rebekah (Isaiah) McAllister, Elizabeth (Ryan) Almeida, Jennifer (Benjamin) R., all of RI; five nieces and nephews, Skylar, Alexander, Taylor, Michael and Baby Almeida, all of RI; two half sisters, Christy Johnson and Sarah Carlson, both of CT; five uncles, Bill Johnson and Roy Johnson, both of CT; John Boone of FL; an Aunt and Uncle, Esther (Jay) Cirillo of CT; and numerous extended family members and friends in RI, CT and TX.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his grandmother, Ellen Rotman, uncle, Timothy Rotman; half brother, Douglas Johnson Jr. and aunt, Penny Crawford.

In place of postponed hugs, you are invited to place a favorite flower on Paul’s casket. A graveside funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 26th at 11am at the Ponemah Cemetery on River Rd., in Westchester, CT.  Masks and social distancing are required to attend. The Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home of Colchester has been entrusted with care of arrangements.  For online condolences, please visit www.auroramccarthyfuneralhome.com
