A message from the son of late Joao L. Teixeira, John Teixeira-

In the mid 50's my father came to this country after going to Brazil. He came to the United States through Ellis Island. He went to Ohio and stayed with his Brother, Manuel Teixeira. Then from there he migrated to Massachusetts. While in Massachusetts he established himself, including getting a job and getting married. My father then started to focus on assisting other Cape Verdean immigrants by showing, and helping, them get  to this country legally- which including so many family members and friends. When I was a kid, I would remember my father turning our dining room space to a bedroom for so many people that he helped migrate to this country.  He would assist his family and let them stay at the house until they could get on their feet, and able to establish themselves. My dad continued to do that work throughout his life, in order to help as many of his family as he could immigrate to the US. Year in and year out, more and more Cape Verdeans started legally immigrating to this country. Because of my father and the work that he did, many families were able to replicate that work and get their families to this country.

In that spirit, the late Jorge Fidalgo also payed it forward when he established himself. Jorge Fidalgo was one of the first people my father helped get to this country. After some time, he moved out of my dads house and to the Dudley street area- where Jorge opened up a business with his family. But it was more than a business.  Instead of "taking" peoples money and spending it on himself- he had that spirit of giving back to his family and community. He in turn helped so many people with anything they needed. If you could name it, he could help with it. He never said no, and would literally give his shirt off his back, which he did. Tragically Jorge was murdered, which devastated my father and the community. It is in his honor, and in his memory that a scholarship was created. Jorge Fidalgo's five children, and myself, will use the funds to continue Jorge's work, which include Radio Nha Terra's academic scholarships to local high school graduates, and other community organizations.
