In Memory of Allan C. Knapp

Donation protected
It's been a year since Dad's passing (December 11, 2019).  COVID means that we aren't going to be able to get together in person this year, but we'd like to do something to honor and acknowledge Dad and the anniversary of his passing.  Melanie, Laura, Brian, and Angie will each be completing an event in memory of Dad in the next few months, and at the conclusion of these events, we'll be making a donation to a few organizations - Smile Train https://www.smiletrain.org/, Hartman Arboretum https://www.hartmanarboretum.org/, and Western National Parks Association https://www.wnpa.org/ - in Dad's honor.

If you'd like, feel free to join us in picking a way to honor Dad's passing, and/or making a donation. Or just send us good thoughts as we honor this anniversary of his passing!  Details on each event we're planning are below:

Melanie - Running a trail half marathon (13.1 miles) in Oracle, AZ on January 23, 2021.
  - Why?  The only half marathon I've ever run was a road half with Dad, Angie, and Brian, in Indianapolis about 15 years ago.  I have alot of memories of that race and of running alongside Dad during much of it. I've always been interested in running a trail half but never gotten around to it.  The distance, being outdoors, and being physically active all remind me of Dad, and I'm really excited to do this in his honor.  I'm going to run the course of the Oracle Rumble (~1500 feet elevation gain during the race) which takes place at Oracle State Park in AZ. https://runazt.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/OracleRumbleHalfMarathon_Map.pdf

Angie and Laura - Hiking the two longest trails in Indiana (Knobstone and Tecumseh) for a total 80+ miles in 2021
 - Why?  Growing up and into adulthood, the outdoors was always part of our time with Dad. He instilled his love of nature in us through many hikes in National parks, locally, and even in the back yard. As COVID -19 has kept us close to home this year, we have both enjoyed new hiking trails in Indiana. To honor Dad’s memory (and amazing ability to hike long distances without ever working out :)), we plan to complete the Knobstone and Tecumseh trails next year as a mix of day and overnight hikes.  Dad always felt better after taking a walk outside, and now his love of nature will help remind us of the everyday beauty around us in 2021.

Brian - Cross country skiing the Birkebeiner (50K or about 31miles) in Hayward WI on Feb 24, 2021
 - Why?  Dad was always about getting out in nature, and trying something new.  He and mom introduced us all to skiing, so many trips out West.  Since moving to Wisconsin, I've taken the love for skiing which he helped instill in me, and turned it into an everyday activity on the cross country trails. The Birkie is the biggest XC race in the country, and I've done it several years now.  Last year, I thought about dad often during the race, especially when it got hard and I didn't feel I had anything left to give.  He helped me succeed then, as he did many times before.  I'll be doing this year's race for him.  www.birkie.com
