This fundraiser is in memory of Kamaal, known far and wide as Maaly, who we lost just over a week ago, just shy of his 24th Birthday. Whilst our pain is unfathomable, we wanted to take a minute to say "thank you" to all those organisations that were a huge part of his young life. Organisations' filled with people that laughed, shared trips and made memories with Maaly. Maaly's universe was filled with love and humour, people who got him, spoke his language, were awed by his strength of character, bore witness to his metal in overcoming his challenges. To those that may wish to honour Kamaal, pay zakat, or simply raise a glass, if you are feeling generous, any amount, large or small, in support of charities that make such a meaningful impact would be welcome.
When we think of Maaly, we think of the young man that would holler and bellow to make sure you knew he was there. We think of the boy that loved a scream fest whether it was the flickering lights of a dimly lit horror, cries of the unwitting victim or the flashing of the roller coasters he loved riding, he thought it great that others were making a racket as loudly as him!
For Daniel his brother, Maaly was his ride or die, his little navigator, with whom he relished joyrides, with the wind in his hair and the music blaring out the beats. Maaly reserved his gentlest touch for his sister Sophia, what is lost for her is unimaginable. His dark humour and his twisted sense of mischief kept his Aunty Jane tangled and a little tormented, in laughter. Maaly was a partner in crime, playing along with his Mum's dark humour, the star of their own very rocky horror show. For his Dad he was a Super Hero, a little man of steel that carried him forward through life. His boy that stood tall, even when life kept knocking him down. The brightness of memories made up of Maaly, will keep his life vivid long into the night.
Lifting our faces to the sky, seeking out the sun or the shiny light of the moon, we will think of the many facets of Maaly, the little sun worshipper, the avid star gazer, the joyous rebel who defied his frailties. For all of us, that were satellites in Maaly's orbit, whilst the weight of the losing him may bear us down, the thought that the love and care will continue for others, will light up the darkness.
