In Care of Debbie Holmes

Donation protected
With the passing of our much beloved Debbie Holmes, in lieu of flowers, we have set up this fund to help support the medical care she received.

Here is her obituary: The final days of the life of Debbie Holmes were reflective of the life she lived, demonstrating immeasurable love for family and friends, caring for others beyond herself, and sharing the much beloved humor and teasing that was her essence. At age 63 on the evening of January 29, 2024, Debbie passed away peacefully, surrounded by the warmth of her loving family.
A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend, Debbie was also a powerhouse athlete, police officer, caregiver, crafter, gardener, cook and champion for the elderly and young alike. She could do just about anything, always with a humor and selflessness that benefited the lives of others.

Central to her life were her husband, children, grandchildren, extended family, pets and dear friends, all of whom she cherished to the depth of her being.

Debbie was born on March 22, 1960 to parents Janet and Lenny Wescott, along with sisters Linda Sewell and Barbara (Smicky) Wescott. Residing in Old Town, Debbie’s high school years saw her excel as a highly talented runner, making and breaking speed records along the way. It was at that time she met the love of her life, Michael Holmes. Marriage and family soon followed, first Elizabeth (Baker), then Seth and Chad. Devoted to their children, life was full of football games, track meets and “mothering,” including feeding and nurturing an array of neighborhood kids and friends that joined in like it was their second home.

Following in their father’s law enforcement footsteps (Lenny Wescott and Ralph Holmes), Debbie and Mike joined the Old Town Police force for a long and stellar career. Starting out as a dispatcher, Debbie was encouraged to attend the police academy. Once there, she excelled again, surpassing academy standards and becoming Old Town’s third female patrol officer.

It was in this endeavor that Debbie stood out to the community significantly. The integrity, compassion and innovation she exemplified over her 29 years at the Old Town Police Department had her respected and sought after from people across the community – from the Governor’s office, community leaders, fellow officers and citizens alike. In addition to her duties, Debbie spearheaded an effort to save the lives of high school students from drunk driving through the Every 15 Minutes Program at Old Town High School. This also led to serving as the OTHS Resource Officer, Community Relations Officer, and Community Substance Abuse Officer, where she enhanced community policing, mentoring, outreach and education to area youth. She was adored by students and faculty alike.

Debbie likewise had a special passion for the elderly, and went above and beyond to assist with their challenges and needs, both physically and emotionally. Her high level of approachability, caring, and humor, connected the police and community in important ways that cannot be understated. Her work inspired many, leading to then-Governor John Baldacci to name September 2, 2004 as “Debbie Holmes Day” across the State of Maine. She was likewise awarded the 2004 Robert Trojanowicz Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award.

These happy years were filled with continued professional and family growth, including the joyous marriages of their children, adding Peter Baker, Jennifer Holmes and Andrea Holmes to the fold. Cherished grandchildren followed: Maddie, Allie & Nathan Baker, Hailey, Mikey & Caroline Holmes, and Carter & Paxton Holmes. Step-sister Kaylie Kenneson, half sister Carrie Jo Wescott, nieces and nephew Candace Lampo, Tracy Comer & Meghan Hill and Rebecca & Evan Beitsch, all held a special place in Aunt Debbie’s heart. In addition to her parents, she was especially fond of her mother-in-law Thelma Holmes, step-Mom Brenda Wescott, as well as loving grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Family was everything to Debbie, and we all knew it and felt it. From stuffed shells, chocolate chip cookies, or burn-your-asshole casserole, Debbie kept us well fed, well loved and continually laughing.

In 2012, a tragic medical mishap for Mike unexpectedly impacted their lives so significantly that both had to prematurely retire from their treasured police career - Mike to recuperate, and Debbie to care for and drive his recovery. Years of medical challenges and stress ensued, but through it all they persevered. During this time, Debbie took up many hobbies, especially making gifts for family and friends. She had a special knack for painting rocks, driftwood or items she found, giving them new life and purpose, always gifting them to others to bring them joy. It was a genuine treat to see what new item she had found and transformed with her endless creative talents.

Equal to Debbie’s caring for others was her absolutely hilarious sense of humor, always delivered with warmth. While her loss will bring shock and sadness to many, it is unquestionable that most everyone has experienced Debbie’s caring style of humor and quick wit. She lifted our spirits and showed us we mattered. We hope that like us, it is her caring spirit, jokes, teasing and comical nature that stays with you and brings a smile to your face in her honor. We will never hear the song YMCA without thinking of her jumping up to dance out the letters with her festive arms and legs, singing Eminem songs, or mimicking a scene from Ace Ventura.

We look forward to hearing your stories of how Debbie brought you joy, love, laughter and support. We welcome you to join us for a celebration of her life and numerous contributions to our community. The date, time and location will be announced shortly.

Most importantly, thank you for being a part of and enriching the life of such a special woman. Our love for her will live on forever.

In lieu of flowers, this fund is to support Debbie’s final care.
