Friends - You are helping us to fight failure in international development. We seem to be having significant influence. Highlights from 2016 are:

• I was part of a small workshop to advise the US Agency for International Development (USAID) on building sustainability into their programs.

• I presented at the World CSR Conference (Mumbai, India); Do Good Data (Chicago, IL); WASH FUTURES 2016 conference (Brisbane, Australia); WASH Symposium (Kampala, Uganda); Global Health and Innovation Conference (New Haven, CT), World Water Week (Stockholm Sweden); WEDC International Conference (Kumasi, Ghana); and several global webinars.

• I worked with The New School Atlanta to develop a citizen-science project on water quality. This project recently won the 2017 Fulcrum Next Generation Award from Southface.

The real measurement of our success will be when more and more people have good quality water and toilet services for generations.  But we need your help to make this happen.

You might have noticed this letter has a lot of Is in it. While Improve International starts with an I, we can’t have the needed impact with just me.   When I founded Improve International, I wanted to keep the organization lean and nimble, so we hired research support on a contract basis and secured interns for special projects. To keep costs down, we don’t have an office. I have been the only full-time employee for our first 5.5 years. We’re trying to change the minds and behavior of a lot of people and organizations, and that requires me or Katie being face to face with them frequently. That takes time and travel. And someone “back at the office” taking care of day-to-day business. Our board has decided that it’s time to grow, just a bit. We need your help to expand our impact.
