No one ever thinks they will be in the position. Especially not my father. As many of you know, my dad, Albert is the last living survivor of his eight siblings all born in Lodi, NJ. This year, he will turn 89 years old. He was a designer by trade, something he has been passionate about all of his life. And, everyone who has met Albert has heard some of his amazing stories. Albert, or “Mr. Albert” as he was known years ago, was even designing and tailoring up to a year and a half ago. That is when his vision started to decline as a result of macular degeneration and glaucoma. The decline was slow at first, and then recently escalated to a point that he is now blind. As one can imagine, losing his eye sight has been very difficult. Albert can no longer live on his own and needs 24/7 care.
Since he is a vet, we have been able to tap into some of the Veterans Association (VA)’s amazing resources. While he still had some slight vision, we were able to get him set up with an aid for a few hours each day during the week, and some in-home health care. However, because of his recent decline and loss of eye sight, he now needs full time help. The VA suggested we put my dad in Medical Foster Home Care which is an alternative to nursing homes, and is only available through the VA. When my dad’s health started to decline, we put him on the list and recently found a place near my house that has an opening.
This place is a blessing. It has a full time care giver in a home setting with two other vets. He has a private room, and the care-giver who lives and owns the home, is there to attend to any of his needs. Of course, this comes with a cost. Although, less expensive than an assisted living facility, the cost is still more than my dad’s social security covers. However, once he is in the program, he can be fast tracked to apply and receive an assisted living pension through the VA, which will cover most of the monthly rent along with his Social Security. The catch is that the pension can only be processed or expedited when he moves in, which can take 30 to 60 days. Hence, the reason for the go fund me. There are not a lot of these homes available and he is in immediate needs of the care. So, we are moving him in this Saturday, the 25th, with the hope that our friends and family can help us fund the gap we have before his pension is processed.
Of course, we are open to other recommendations for funding, but are hoping that each of you could contribute something to get to our gap of $3,200.
