Please Help Baby G and His Family
At the age of three months, a tumor was discovered on the back of Gavin’s, aka “Baby G's” neck. Shortly thereafter the tumor was surgically removed and sent to pathology. At first, the doctors thought he had a highly curable childhood cancer. The day after Thanksgiving, his parents received the heartbreaking news that Gavin actually has a rare and aggressive cancer called Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor (AT-RT).
Baby G is currently being treated at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC), in connection with Dana Farber. Fortunately, scans prior to the start of his chemotherapy treatments showed that the cancer had not metastasized anywhere else in his body. With this news, Baby G will receive aggressive chemotherapy treatments for a minimum of 18 weeks. Once chemotherapy is completed Gavin will travel to Boston for further treatments and finally a bone marrow transplant when his is deemed cancer free.
Gavin's mom, Mary, who is currently employed as a labor/delivery nurse at DHMC, took a leave of absence to be with him. Most of Gavin’s treatment will be inpatient leaving Pepe (Richard), who is employed as a carpenter, to try and keep the `household` together. He is caring for Baby G's older siblings; Lily who is five and Patrick who is four. Unfortunately, like most families that rely on two incomes, their family income has been reduced to one.
We ask for people to search within their hearts to please give donations to this family during this horrible time. We also ask that people donate blood and platelets as Gavin and so many others oncology patients are in need of as they battle this horrific disease.
After Baby G has received a clean bill of health, any donations that are received in excess will be paid forward to either another needy family, donated to the hospital and to research for AT-RT.
