Dear Family, Friends and Friends of Friends,
We are creating this page to help support an incredible woman, sister, mother, wife, daughter and friend who was recently diagnosed with cancer.
We are hoping to raise money for Kori Desmarais (formerly Ganchar), our beautiful 31 year old loving sister. It was with great hesitation that Kori agreed to let me share her story while fighting to get healthy for her new family as she continued to get more hard news to swallow. Despite the news, Kori manages to find the strength to be an incredible new mom and loving partner to her husband Mike.
In mid-2015, Kori and Mike were blessed to receive the news that Kori was pregnant. Shortly after, Kori started to get odd symptoms that led her to go for a number of medical tests. She was then referred to a breast specialist who decided to do a biopsy.
Sadly on December 16th, Kori's results came back positive for a very rare form of cancer known as Paget Disease of the breast. Being half way through her pregnancy, they were unable to do a CT scan or Mammogram to determine exactly where the cancer was and at what stage it was at. They were given two options to either do a Lumpectomy or Mastectomy. Without question, they decided to do the Mastectomy in late January to hopefully remove any sign of cancer.
While doing the Mastectomy they found a 2.3 cm tumor. The doctors also removed 5 lymph nodes and 3 tested positive for cancer. She was then informed that she had a second form of rare cancer known as HER2 Positive. Kori was then told they would need to induce the baby early to get her into chemotherapy treatments and then radiation treatments as soon as possible.
Zachary Lucas Desmarais was born March 14th, 2016. He brings so much joy and positivity to Kori, Mike and her recovery. A few days after, Kori was sent for a full body CT scan to finally figure out the state that everything was in. We were shocked to hear the horrible news that the cancer is metastatic and has now spread into the lungs in some scattered spots. They rushed Kori in to start chemotherapy with round 2 being this week. Due to the severity of her cancer they have not been able to give us a timeline as to how long the treatments will continue for.
As Kori and the family go through this horrible battle, we are hoping to relieve some of the financial anxiety so they have one less thing to worry about. The money raised will go towards different medical expenses, recovery and help with the new family.
The love, kind messages, prayers and support that we’ve received from friends and family has truly been overwhelming and extremely appreciated. So many people have asked what they can do to help during this difficult time, which is why we have created this page. Please help our sister and the family in fighting this cancer.
